Čachtice Castle is a ruined medieval fortress in western Slovakia, standing on a hill above the village of Čachtice. Built in the thirteenth century, it later became closely associated with Countess Elizabeth Báthory, who lived there and was eventually imprisoned there. The castle’s ruined walls, elevated position, and strong connection to Báthory have made it one of Slovakia’s best-known historic castle sites.
Čachtice Castle appears in Dragonheart (1996) and Bathory (2008). Dragonheart uses the ruins directly in its opening sequence, while Bathory is closely tied to the site through its subject and includes scenes filmed at the castle.
In Dragonheart (1996), Čachtice Castle is used in the opening sequence as the castle ruins where Bowen teaches the young Einon swordsmanship. The exposed hilltop ruins give the scene a stark medieval look.
In Bathory (2008), Čachtice Castle appears in the opening as snow-covered ruins, introducing the historical setting associated with Elizabeth Báthory. The ruined castle is used as a visual link to the real place connected to the story.
