Dragonheart is a 1996 fantasy adventure film directed by Rob Cohen and starring Dennis Quaid, David Thewlis, Dina Meyer and Pete Postlethwaite, with Sean Connery providing the voice of Draco, the last dragon. Set in a medieval world shaped by war, betrayal and fading ideals, the story follows dragon-slayer Bowen as he reluctantly joins forces with Draco after discovering that the creature he is supposed to hunt is far more honourable than the human rulers around him. The film mixes sword-and-sorcery adventure with comedy, friendship and tragedy, and it became especially well known for its then-groundbreaking visual effects, with Draco standing as one of the major CGI achievements of the 1990s.

The film was shot primarily in Slovakia, and its locations are a major reason why the medieval setting feels so convincing. Rather than relying mainly on studio-built fantasy landscapes, the production used real castles, cliffs and rocky terrain across the country, including places such as ฤŒachtice Castle, Spiลก Castle, Tomรกลกovskรฝ vรฝhฤพad and the Drevenรญk area. These locations give the film a striking mix of ruined fortresses, steep limestone formations and wide open highland scenery, creating a world that feels harsh, ancient and believable rather than polished or artificial. Bratislava also served as one of the production bases, but it is the dramatic Slovak countryside and castle ruins that give Dragonheart its strongest visual identity and help turn the filmโ€™s mythical kingdom into something that feels physically rooted in a real landscape.
