Fisherman’s Bastion, or Halászbástya, is one of the most recognisable landmarks in Budapest. The white neo-Romanesque terrace stands on Castle Hill on the Buda side of the city, beside Matthias Church, with wide views across the Danube towards the Hungarian Parliament Building and Pest. Although it looks much older, the present structure was built around the turn of the 20th century as a decorative viewing terrace rather than a defensive fortress. Its towers, arches, staircases and fairytale-like appearance have made it one of Budapest’s most photographed places, and also a natural choice for film productions looking for a romantic, historic or slightly otherworldly European setting.
Fisherman’s Bastion has appeared in several international productions, including “I Spy” (2002), “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy” (2011) and “Gemini Man” (2019). It has also been used in television productions such as “The Borgias” (2011–2013) and “Maigret” (2016–2017). Sometimes the location appears as Budapest itself, while in other productions the stairways and terraces are used more flexibly as a stand-in for other European cities.
In “I Spy” (2002), Fisherman’s Bastion is part of the film’s Budapest setting. The action comedy, starring Eddie Murphy and Owen Wilson, makes heavy use of the city’s most recognisable landmarks, and the Castle District gives the film a distinctly tourist-friendly version of Budapest. Fisherman’s Bastion, with its terraces and views over the Danube, helps establish the city as an elegant and cinematic backdrop for the spy plot.
In “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy” (2011), Budapest is used to create the Cold War atmosphere of the story, and Fisherman’s Bastion is one of the city locations connected to the film. The location fits the film’s muted, old-European spy world, where grand architecture, historic streets and public spaces become part of the tense and controlled visual style. Unlike the more tourist-focused use of Budapest in “I Spy”, the city here is presented in a colder and more secretive way.
In “Gemini Man” (2019), Fisherman’s Bastion appears during the Budapest section of the film. Henry Brogan, played by Will Smith, uses the location while trying to stay ahead of the forces pursuing him. The terrace gives the scene a wide, open and visually striking setting, with the city below and the architecture of Castle Hill around him. The location is very recognisable in the film, although in real life it is usually far busier with visitors than it appears on screen.
