Wiener Riesenrad is the historic Ferris wheel at the entrance to the Prater amusement park in Viennaโs Leopoldstadt district. It was built in 1897 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Emperor Franz Joseph Iโs reign and has since become one of the cityโs most recognisable landmarks. With its large red passenger cabins, steel structure and views across Vienna, the wheel has a very distinct screen presence. For film-location purposes, it should be separated from Prater itself: Prater covers the wider amusement park, fairground streets and surrounding entertainment area, while Wiener Riesenrad refers specifically to the Ferris wheel, its entrance area, cabins and the views from the wheel.
Wiener Riesenrad has appeared in several films where it is used either as a central scene location or as a clear visual symbol of Vienna. The most important examples include The Third Man (1949), Scorpio (1973), The Living Daylights (1987), Before Sunrise (1995), Woman in Gold (2015) and Sachertorte (2022). The wheel is also associated with other productions and Vienna-set screen appearances, but for That Film Spot it is best to connect this location only to films where the wheel itself is visible or directly used, rather than every film that simply uses Prater or Vienna.
In The Third Man (1949), Wiener Riesenrad is the setting for one of the filmโs most famous scenes. Holly Martins meets Harry Lime at the Prater, and the two men ride in one of the Ferris wheel cabins. As the cabin rises above Vienna, Lime looks down at the people below and compares them to small moving dots, revealing his cold view of human life and setting up one of the filmโs defining moral confrontations. The scene makes the wheel more than a background landmark; it becomes a suspended, isolated space where Lime can look down on the city and justify his actions.
In Scorpio (1973), Wiener Riesenrad appears as part of the filmโs Vienna material. The wheel is used as a recognisable landmark, helping to establish the city during the filmโs European spy-thriller setting. This is a weaker scene connection than The Third Man, The Living Daylights or Before Sunrise, so the film can be included in the locationโs film list, but I would not write a more detailed scene description unless the exact sequence is checked visually.
In The Living Daylights (1987), Wiener Riesenrad is used in the Vienna section of the James Bond film. James Bond and Kara Milovy visit Prater, and the Ferris wheel becomes the setting for a romantic cabin scene between them. The film also uses the wider Prater area, so this is a good example where the location should be split: Prater can cover the broader amusement-park material, while Wiener Riesenrad should be linked specifically to the scenes around and inside the Ferris wheel.
In Before Sunrise (1995), Wiener Riesenrad appears during Jesse and Cรฉlineโs night in Vienna. The two characters ride the Ferris wheel together, and the cabin scene becomes one of the filmโs most intimate early moments. The quiet movement of the wheel and the view over the city fit the filmโs wandering, conversational structure, while the enclosed cabin gives Jesse and Cรฉline a private space within the larger public landscape of Vienna. Like The Third Man, the scene uses the wheel as more than a landmark; it becomes part of the emotional structure of the film.
In Woman in Gold (2015), Wiener Riesenrad appears as part of the filmโs Vienna imagery. Since the film deals with memory, exile and the legacy of Nazi-looted art, the use of recognisable Vienna landmarks helps connect the modern legal story to the cityโs past. I would keep this description fairly restrained unless the exact scene is checked, but the wheel can be included when building a complete film list for the location.
In Sachertorte (2022), Wiener Riesenrad appears as one of the romantic Vienna locations used in the film. The film follows Karl, who travels to Vienna and waits daily at Cafรฉ Sacher after a brief romantic encounter, and it uses several well-known city locations as part of its romantic-comedy version of Vienna. The Ferris wheel fits that pattern as a classic Vienna landmark and as a location strongly associated with screen romance after Before Sunrise.
