Müpa Budapest

Müpa Budapest is a major cultural and performing arts centre on Komor Marcell Street in the Ferencváros district of Budapest, close to the Danube and Rákóczi Bridge. The building opened in 2005 and was known in English as the Palace of Arts before the shorter Müpa name became standard. It contains the Béla Bartók National Concert Hall, the Festival Theatre and museum spaces, and is one of Budapest’s most recognisable modern cultural buildings. Its large glass surfaces, angular exterior, open interior spaces and position beside the National Theatre make it visually different from Budapest’s older imperial and historic architecture, which has made it useful for productions needing a contemporary institutional setting.

Müpa Budapest appears in The Martian (2015) and The Day of the Jackal (2024–). In The Martian, the building stands in for the China National Space Administration, while in The Day of the Jackal it stands in for a theatre in Tallinn, Estonia. In both productions, Müpa is used as a modern institutional building rather than as itself.

In The Martian (2015), Müpa Budapest appears as the China National Space Administration. The building is used during the section where Chinese space officials discuss the classified Taiyang Shen booster and decide to offer it to NASA to help rescue Mark Watney. Müpa’s modern glass-and-stone exterior stands in for the Chinese space agency building, while the scene places the Budapest location inside the film’s wider international rescue effort. The building appears as a clean, contemporary government and science setting rather than as a concert venue.

In The Day of the Jackal (2024), Müpa Budapest appears as the Tallinn theatre connected to Ulle Dag Charles and the launch of River. The building is first used in episode 4, as the series builds toward Charles’ public presentation, and later becomes the setting for the major speech event where the Jackal and Bianca are both present. Although the story places the theatre in Estonia, the real location is Müpa Budapest in Hungary. The building’s modern performance spaces and public-event atmosphere are used for the River storyline, where corporate technology, security, surveillance and assassination planning come together around Charles’ appearance.
