Heroes’ Square is one of Budapest’s best-known public spaces, located at the end of Andrássy Avenue at the entrance to City Park. Completed in connection with Hungary’s millennium celebrations in 1896, the square is dominated by the Millennium Monument and flanked by the Museum of Fine Arts and the Kunsthalle. Its monumental layout has made it one of the city’s most recognisable film locations.
Heroes’ Square appears in A Good Day to Die Hard (2013), Red Sparrow (2018), and Gemini Man (2019). In A Good Day to Die Hard, the square was used extensively during the Budapest shoot, with the city doubling for Moscow. In Red Sparrow it stands in for Moscow, while in Gemini Man it is used as part of a Budapest street sequence.
In A Good Day to Die Hard (2013), Heroes’ Square is used as part of the Moscow setting during the film’s Budapest-shot action material. The square’s monumental layout and statues make it easily recognisable, even when the film uses Budapest to represent Russia.
In Red Sparrow (2018), Heroes’ Square appears in the opening scenes as Dominika hurries through the square past the Palace of Art, with digital effects altering parts of the background to make the setting read as Moscow. The square is used directly as one of the film’s clearest Budapest-for-Russia locations.
In Gemini Man (2019), Heroes’ Square appears in the taxi sequence as the car drives through the square on its way toward the catacombs scene. The location is used briefly, but it is clearly identifiable as one of Budapest’s best-known landmarks.
