Red Sparrow is a 2018 spy thriller directed by Francis Lawrence and based on Jason Matthews’ novel of the same name. Starring Jennifer Lawrence as Dominika Egorova, a former ballerina drawn into the brutal world of Russian intelligence, the film follows her transformation into a so-called “sparrow” trained to manipulate, seduce and survive. The story mixes espionage, psychological pressure and political intrigue with a colder, more severe tone than a conventional action thriller, and much of its identity comes from the tension between elegance and cruelty.

The film was shot across several Central and Western European cities, with Budapest serving as the main production base and standing in for much of the story’s Russian world. Production notes confirm filming in Budapest, Bratislava, Vienna and London, while identified locations include the Hungarian State Opera in Budapest, the Szabó Ervin Library in the Wenckheim Palace, and Dom odborov Istropolis in Bratislava. Vienna was also used for key sequences, including locations around Michaelerplatz. This gives the film a very distinctive geographical texture: rather than relying on one generic spy-city backdrop, it moves through ornate opera interiors, monumental old civic buildings and austere Cold War-looking urban spaces that reinforce its atmosphere of control, surveillance and danger.
