A Good Day to Die Hard is a 2013 American action thriller directed by John Moore and the fifth and final film in the Die Hard series. Bruce Willis returns as John McClane, who travels to Moscow after learning that his estranged son Jack has landed in serious trouble, only to discover that Jack is actually working deep undercover. The film quickly expands from a father-son rescue story into a chase involving political corruption, espionage and nuclear material, giving it a more international and large-scale feel than the earlier entries. While it keeps the franchiseโ€™s trademark explosions and destructive action, it is notably more focused on relentless pursuit and spectacle than on the confined, under-pressure setup of the original film.

Although the story is set largely in Moscow and later moves toward Chernobyl, the film was shot mainly in Hungary, with Budapest serving as the principal stand-in for Moscow. Filming began there in April 2012, and the cityโ€™s broad avenues, monumental squares and older urban districts were used to create the Russian capitalโ€™s look on screen. The production also used a military firing range near Hajmรกskรฉr for live-ammunition sequences and the Hungaroring in Mogyorรณd for some of the vehicular stunt work, which helps explain the filmโ€™s unusually large and aggressive chase scenes. Some real Moscow footage was also incorporated, but much of the filmโ€™s urban identity was built in and around Budapest, blending recognisable Hungarian locations with digital alterations to create a harsher, more chaotic version of Moscow.
