Hyttklokka is one of the historic landmarks of Røros, located at the top of Mørkstugata by Malmplassen. The bell was used to signal the beginning and end of work at the smelter, and may also have served as an alarm bell in emergencies such as fire. With Røros Church visible behind it from certain angles, Hyttklokka has become one of the classic visual motifs of the old mining town.
In An-Magritt (1969), Hyttklokka appears in a scene that ties directly into the mining society and everyday life at Røros. When food arrives, the people gathered nearby begin to cheer. An-Magritt, played by Liv Ullmann, then walks over to Hyttklokka and rings the bell. The moment uses the real historical object as part of the community’s reaction, turning the bell into more than a background detail and connecting the scene closely to Røros’ old smelting works environment.
