Sleggveien is one of the most distinctive streets in the historic mining town of Røros in Norway. Located between Hitterelva and the slag heaps of Slegghaugan, the narrow street is lined with small protected wooden houses that were once home to some of the poorer parts of the mining community, including workers, craftsmen and travelling people. Its preserved buildings, uneven street line and surrounding industrial landscape make it one of Røros’ most atmospheric areas, and a natural filming location for productions looking for an older Norwegian setting.
The street is known from several Norwegian and international productions connected to Røros. It appears in An-Magritt (1969), based on Johan Falkberget’s stories from the old mining society, and became widely recognised through the Pippi Longstocking Christmas scenes filmed in Røros. It was later used in the Norwegian advent series “Jul i Blåfjell” (1999), where the old street and winter landscape helped shape the fairytale atmosphere of the series.
In An-Magritt (1969), Sleggveien is used as part of the film’s depiction of the old mining community at Røros. Arne Skouen’s film, starring Liv Ullmann as An-Magritt, is based on Johan Falkberget’s “Nattens brød” novels, and the street’s small wooden houses and close relationship to the slag heaps give the scenes a strong sense of place. In one scene, An-Magritt walks through Sleggveien and enters one of the old houses, making the preserved street a direct part of the film’s Røros setting rather than just a general backdrop.
In “Pippi Longstocking” (1969), Sleggveien appears in one of the most memorable winter scenes filmed in Røros. Pippi sends a giant snowball rolling down the street after the thieves, using the steep and narrow layout of Sleggveien as part of the comedy. The scene has become strongly associated with the street, and visitors can still recognise the old wooden houses and the slope where the snowball sequence was filmed.
In “Jul i Blåfjell” (1999), Sleggveien was used as the road to Blåfjell. The protected street and its old houses gave the NRK Christmas series a fairytale-like entrance into its mountain world, while still keeping the story grounded in the real winter landscape of Røros. The series helped strengthen the town’s association with Norwegian Christmas television, and Sleggveien became one of its most recognisable real-world locations.
