Atlantic Ocean Road

Atlantic Ocean Road is a scenic coastal road in Møre og Romsdal, Norway, connecting Averøy with the mainland across a chain of small islands, causeways and bridges. Known in Norwegian as Atlanterhavsveien, the road is part of County Road 64 and is one of Norway’s most recognisable driving routes. Its most famous section runs across low skerries facing the open Norwegian Sea, with bridges rising and curving above the water. The best-known structure is Storseisundet Bridge, whose dramatic angle can make the road appear to drop into the ocean when seen from certain viewpoints. The exposed coastal setting, changing weather and combination of road, sea and sky have made Atlantic Ocean Road a natural screen location for car scenes, establishing shots and dramatic travel imagery.

Atlantic Ocean Road has appeared in The Snowman (2017), No Time to Die (2021) and Succession (2018–2023). In these productions, the road is used for movement through Norway rather than as a static landmark. Its bridges, ocean views and remote coastal atmosphere give the scenes a strong sense of scale, placing the characters in a landscape that feels both spectacular and isolated.

In The Snowman (2017), Atlantic Ocean Road appears during the film’s Norwegian location work, with Storseisundet Bridge providing one of the most recognisable road images in the film. The bridge’s unusual curve and exposed coastal position fit the film’s cold, bleak visual style, where Norwegian landscapes are used to create a sense of distance, isolation and unease. The road appears as part of the film’s wider use of real Norwegian locations, connecting the murder investigation to a landscape of fjords, islands, bridges and winter weather.

In No Time to Die (2021), Atlantic Ocean Road appears during the Norway section of the James Bond film. Bond and Madeleine Swann drive through the coastal landscape while being pursued by Safin’s men, and the road becomes part of the film’s chase geography. The sequence uses the exposed bridges and island-hopping structure of Atlanterhavsveien to create a sense of danger and momentum, with the Aston Martin moving through one of Norway’s most distinctive road landscapes. The film also uses other Norwegian material around Langvann near Oslo, but Atlantic Ocean Road belongs to the western Norway chase sequence.

In Succession (2023), Atlantic Ocean Road appears in “Kill List”, episode 5 of season 4. The episode moves the Roy family and Waystar Royco executives to Norway for negotiations with Lukas Matsson and GoJo, and the road is used as part of the arrival sequence. The characters drive along the coastal road on their way into the Norwegian setting, with the bridges and ocean landscape helping establish the shift from Manhattan corporate interiors to Matsson’s more remote, controlled territory. The road functions as a visual introduction to Norway in the episode, before the story continues at locations such as Juvet Landscape Hotel, Romsdalen Gondola and Eggen Restaurant.
