Trollstigen is a dramatic mountain road in Rauma Municipality in Møre og Romsdal, Norway. The road forms part of Norwegian County Road 63 and the Norwegian Scenic Route Geiranger–Trollstigen, connecting the Åndalsnes area with Valldal through steep mountain terrain. It is best known for its eleven hairpin bends, the Stigfossen waterfall, the surrounding peaks and the viewing platforms at the top of the pass. The road’s combination of narrow turns, exposed mountainsides, waterfalls and deep valley views has made it one of Norway’s most recognisable road landscapes on screen.
Trollstigen has appeared in several productions that use the road either as a spectacular driving route or as part of the wider Western Norway landscape. Productions connected to the location include Maattrraan (2012), Black Widow (2021), Børning 3 (2020) and Succession (2018–2023). The road is especially effective in scenes built around travel, escape, car movement and establishing shots, because the bends and steep mountain setting are visually unmistakable.
In Maattrraan (2012), Trollstigen appears in the song sequence “Naani Koni”. The Tamil action thriller filmed the musical number across several Norwegian locations, including Trollstigen, Geiranger, Atlanterhavsveien, Måløy and Aurlandsfjord. The road is used as part of the song’s sweeping Norwegian landscape imagery, placing the performers against one of the country’s most recognisable mountain routes.
In Børning 3 (2020), Trollstigen appears as part of the film’s Norwegian road-racing geography. The Børning films are built around cars, speed and long-distance driving, and Trollstigen gives the third film one of its most distinctive road settings. The hairpin bends and steep mountain terrain fit the series’ combination of car culture, comedy and exaggerated racing spectacle.
In Black Widow (2021), Trollstigen appears during Natasha Romanoff’s Norway section. The road is used as part of her journey through the Norwegian landscape, with the winding mountain route, waterfalls and sharp turns creating a dramatic passage toward her isolated hideout. The location helps give the early part of the film a colder, more remote atmosphere before the story moves into the larger spy and family conflict.
In Succession (2023), Trollstigen appears in “Kill List”, episode 5 of season 4. The episode takes the Roy family and Waystar Royco executives to Norway for negotiations with Lukas Matsson and GoJo, and Trollstigen is used as one of the establishing landscape shots that introduces the Norwegian setting. The mountain road’s steep bends and dramatic valley views help shift the series visually away from Manhattan offices and private jets into a more remote, controlled Nordic environment.
