Spiš Castle is a vast medieval castle ruin in eastern Slovakia, rising above Spišské Podhradie on a limestone hill. Built in the twelfth century and expanded over later centuries, it is one of the largest castle complexes in Central Europe and is part of the UNESCO-listed site of Spiš Castle and its associated cultural monuments. Its scale, hilltop position, and exposed stone walls have made it one of Slovakia’s most recognisable historic film locations.
Spiš Castle appears in Dragonheart (1996), Kull the Conqueror (1997), and The Last Legion (2007). The Slovak Film Commission specifically lists all three among the productions filmed at the castle, and IMDb’s location listings also identify Spiš Castle for Dragonheart and Kull the Conqueror.
In Dragonheart (1996), Spiš Castle was used as one of the film’s major medieval fortress locations. Its large ruined walls and elevated setting fit the film’s fantasy world and helped create some of its broadest castle imagery.
In Kull the Conqueror (1997), Spiš Castle was used as one of the film’s principal fortress settings. The castle’s extensive battlements and open hilltop profile suited the film’s sword-and-sorcery setting and provided a convincing backdrop for the kingdom’s fortified environments.
In The Last Legion (2007), Spiš Castle was one of the Slovak locations used during production. The site’s ruined medieval architecture matched the film’s late-antique and early-medieval visual world, giving it the kind of stronghold setting needed for its historical adventure scenes.
