Kull the Conqueror

Kull the Conqueror is a 1997 fantasy adventure film directed by John Nicolella and starring Kevin Sorbo as Kull, a barbarian warrior who unexpectedly seizes a throne and must then defend it against court intrigue, dark sorcery and the resurrected witch-queen Akivasha. Although the character comes from Robert E. Howard, the film actually reworks material that had originally been developed as a Conan project, which gives it a familiar swords-and-sorcery structure of usurpation, prophecy, monsters and royal betrayal. It was not a major commercial success, but it has remained a recognisable late-1990s fantasy title, especially for viewers interested in that era’s mix of practical locations, castles and pre-digital adventure filmmaking.

The film was shot mainly in Slovakia and Croatia, and those real locations are a large part of why it has a more rugged visual feel than many studio-bound fantasy films. In Slovakia, production used places such as Spiš Castle, Červený Kameň Castle and Devín Castle, all of which brought real medieval ruins, fortified walls and hilltop settings into the film’s world. Croatian locations included Kornati National Park and Murter Island, which added harsher coastal landscapes and more open, elemental scenery. Trade coverage from the period also notes that producer Raffaella De Laurentiis returned to Koliba Studios in Slovakia after Dragonheart, using standing infrastructure there alongside the location work. The result is a fantasy world built from a mix of castle ruins, rocky coastlines and Eastern European production spaces rather than purely artificial sets, which gives the film a more grounded and weathered atmosphere.
