The Day of the Jackal (2024–) is a British espionage thriller series based on Frederick Forsyth’s 1971 novel and the 1973 film adaptation. The series updates the story to the modern world, with Eddie Redmayne as the Jackal, an elite assassin who uses disguises, prosthetics, false identities and long-range precision shooting to carry out high-value contracts. Lashana Lynch plays Bianca Pullman, a British intelligence officer whose firearms expertise makes her central to the effort to identify and stop him. Rather than simply retelling the original assassination plot, the series expands the cat-and-mouse structure into a contemporary international thriller involving surveillance, political power, private wealth, family secrets and the professional isolation of both hunter and hunted.

The Day of the Jackal was filmed across several European countries, with London, Hungary, Austria and Croatia forming the main production base. Although the story moves through many countries, the production often used one place to stand in for another. Budapest was one of the key filming centres, providing streets, interiors, hotels and large city locations that could double for several European settings. Vienna was also used for some of the series’ continental material, while London provides the British intelligence world around Bianca Pullman and the official pursuit of the Jackal. Croatia is especially important to the visual identity of the series, with Zagreb, Rijeka, Pag, Opatija, Lovran, Labin and the Istrian coast all connected to the production. The Jackal’s home with his wife Nuria was filmed at Villas Rosa dei Venti in Rabac, giving the character a private coastal refuge far removed from his work as an assassin. The series uses these locations to create a broad, expensive-looking European thriller landscape: government offices, hotels, airports, coastal villas, old city streets, modern urban spaces and remote escape routes all become part of the Jackal’s world of movement, concealment and pursuit.
