Bran Castle is a medieval fortress in Bran, near Brașov in Transylvania, Romania. Built in the late fourteenth century on a rocky hill above a mountain pass, it is one of the country’s most recognisable castles. Its towers, inner courtyard, and dramatic position have made it world-famous, especially through its long popular association with Dracula, even though that connection belongs more to later legend and tourism than to documented history.
Bran Castle appears in Old Dracula (1974) and Dracula 2012 (2013). It is also widely promoted as “Dracula’s Castle” in popular culture, which has helped make it a natural choice for vampire-themed productions and Dracula-related screen imagery.
In Old Dracula (1974), Bran Castle is used for the establishing exterior of Dracula’s castle. The film uses the real Romanian fortress to introduce the Count’s residence, giving the production a genuine Transylvanian landmark for its opening castle imagery.
In Dracula 2012 (2013), Bran Castle is listed as one of the film’s Romanian filming locations. In this case, the castle is again tied directly to the Dracula setting, drawing on the site’s established screen identity as the most famous “Dracula” castle in Romania.
