Romania has become a popular filming country for productions looking for Gothic castles, mountain landscapes, historic cities and large studio facilities. Bucharest and its surrounding areas have been used for films such as “Cold Mountain”, “The Nun” and “Borat”, while Castel Film Studios and Buftea Studios have helped attract a range of international productions. Transylvania’s castles and medieval towns have also given Romania a strong screen identity, with locations such as Hunedoara Castle, Sighișoara and the Carpathian Mountains often used for horror, fantasy and historical settings. More recently, “Wednesday” brought renewed attention to Romanian locations, including Cantacuzino Castle in Bușteni and several sites in Bucharest. With its mix of old-world architecture, forests, mountains and studio infrastructure, Romania has become one of Eastern Europe’s most distinctive filming countries.
