England has played a central role in international film history, both through its major studios and its wide range of instantly recognisable locations. London is one of the country’s most frequently used filming cities, appearing in everything from the “Harry Potter” films and “Paddington” to James Bond entries such as “Skyfall”, “Spectre” and “No Time to Die”. Outside the capital, England’s castles, historic houses, villages and coastlines have also been widely used on screen. Alnwick Castle in Northumberland became part of Hogwarts in the early “Harry Potter” films, Hatfield House has appeared in several major productions, and Puzzlewood in Gloucestershire was used for “Star Wars: The Force Awakens”. From period dramas and fantasy films to action blockbusters, England’s mix of medieval architecture, urban landmarks and countryside has made it one of the most important filming locations in Europe.
