Guildford Cathedral

Guildford Cathedral in Guildford, Surrey, is one of the most distinctive modern cathedrals in England. Standing on Stag Hill above the town, it was designed by Edward Maufe and built between 1936 and 1961, with its pale brick exterior, long nave and high tower giving it a stark, monumental appearance. Unlike many older English cathedrals, Guildford Cathedral has a relatively modern and severe look, which is exactly what made it so effective on screen in one of the most famous British-filmed horror sequences of the 1970s.

Guildford Cathedral is best known as a filming location from The Omen (1976). The film also used several other British locations, including Bishops Park and All Saints Church in Fulham, Pyrford Court in Surrey and St Peter’s Church in Staines, but Guildford Cathedral provides one of the clearest early signs that something is deeply wrong with Damien. The cathedral has also appeared in television productions such as “The Sandman” (2022–) and “The Witcher” (2019–).

In The Omen (1976), Guildford Cathedral is used for the scene where Robert and Katherine Thorn try to take Damien to church. As their car approaches the cathedral, Damien suddenly reacts with terror and rage, screaming and attacking his mother from the back seat. The building’s tall, austere exterior gives the moment a powerful visual force, making the cathedral feel almost threatening even before the child’s reaction confirms his connection to something evil. The scene is one of the film’s key early warnings about Damien, and Guildford Cathedral’s unusual modern Gothic/Art Deco appearance makes it far more unsettling than a more traditional church setting might have been.

In “The Sandman” (2022–), Guildford Cathedral is used for scenes connected to Dream’s palace. The cathedral’s tall interior, pale stone and monumental symmetry fit the series’ mythological and dreamlike visual style, allowing the real building to become part of a supernatural world rather than simply appearing as a church. Its modern, almost abstract form makes it especially useful for fantasy, where the location can feel grand, sacred and slightly unreal at the same time.

In “The Witcher” (2019–), Guildford Cathedral is used as part of the series’ fantasy world. The building’s dramatic scale, high arches and severe modern-Gothic character allow it to stand apart from more ordinary medieval-looking locations, giving the scenes a more unusual and stylised atmosphere. Like in “The Sandman” (2022–), the cathedral works because it does not look like a generic English church; it has a monumental, almost otherworldly quality that suits large-scale fantasy storytelling.
