Wassertor is a medieval water gate in Wismar, Germany, and one of the cityโ€™s best-known surviving historic structures. Built in the fifteenth century as part of Wismarโ€™s old fortifications, it stands near the harbour and marks the point where goods and traffic once passed between the town and the waterfront. Its brick Gothic form and direct connection to the harbour make it one of the most distinctive historic landmarks in Wismar.

Wassertor appears in Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror (1922). Wismar was used as the fictional town of Wisborg in F. W. Murnauโ€™s film, and Wassertor is one of the clearly identified real locations used during the production.

In Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror (1922), Wassertor appears in the harbour-related Wisborg material after Count Orlokโ€™s arrival by sea. The gate helps establish the townโ€™s maritime setting and forms part of the filmโ€™s exterior location work in Wismar, which gives the fictional Wisborg a real northern German urban character. In the famous scene we can see Nosferatu carries his coffin under the gate.
