Al-Khazneh, or “The Treasury,” is a famous 1st-century AD rock-cut temple and mausoleum in Petra, Jordan. Carved directly into rose-red sandstone, this 39-meter-high masterpiece showcases Nabataean, Greek, and Roman architectural influences. It likely served as a royal tomb for King Aretas IV, though its name stems from Bedouin legends of hidden treasure.
Al-Khazneh was the iconic filming location for the Temple of the Holy Grail in the 1989 film Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. While the exterior is famous, the interior scenes were actually filmed in a studio in England. Recent archeological discoveries in 2024 confirmed a 2,000-year-old tomb beneath the structure containing a chalice.
