Basilica Cistern, or Yerebatan Sarnฤฑcฤฑ, is one of Istanbulโ€™s most atmospheric historic landmarks. The vast underground water reservoir was built in the 6th century during the reign of Emperor Justinian I and lies close to Hagia Sophia in the old part of the city. Its rows of marble columns, shallow water, low light and famous Medusa-head column bases give the place an almost unreal quality, somewhere between an archaeological site, a palace ruin and a dreamlike underground temple. This has made it especially attractive to filmmakers looking for mystery, danger or a hidden world beneath Istanbul.

The cistern has appeared in several films, most famously “From Russia with Love” (1963), “The International” (2009) and “Brotherhood of Tears” (2013). It is also strongly associated with “Inferno” (2016), although the Basilica Cistern scenes in that film were recreated at Korda Studios near Budapest rather than shot inside the real monument.

In “From Russia with Love” (1963), James Bond and Kerim Bey travel by boat through the Basilica Cistern while spying on the Soviet consulate. The film takes liberties with Istanbulโ€™s geography, presenting the cistern as if it were directly connected to the consulate, but the real location is unmistakable. The long rows of columns, water reflections and shadowy atmosphere make it one of the most memorable Istanbul scenes in the Bond series, and one of the earliest major international uses of the Basilica Cistern as a film location.

In “The International” (2009), the Basilica Cistern is used during the Istanbul section of the thriller. The film follows an investigation into a powerful international bank, and Istanbul provides some of the storyโ€™s more secretive and atmospheric locations. The cisternโ€™s underground setting fits the filmโ€™s mood of hidden systems, corruption and things taking place beneath the surface, both literally and thematically.

In “Brotherhood of Tears” (2013), the Basilica Cistern appears in a scene where the main character, working as a courier, delivers a suitcase to a mysterious client. The location gives the meeting an isolated and ominous feeling, using the dark water, columns and underground space to create a sense of secrecy around the exchange.

In “Inferno” (2016), the storyโ€™s climax is set in the Basilica Cistern, with Robert Langdon racing to stop a deadly biological threat beneath Istanbul. The film makes heavy visual use of the cisternโ€™s identity, especially its underground scale and eerie atmosphere, but the actual scenes were not filmed inside the real Basilica Cistern. To avoid damaging the historic site, the production recreated the location at Korda Studios near Budapest.
