The Monument to the Battle of the Nations, known in German as the Völkerschlachtdenkmal, is a monumental memorial located at Straße des 18. Oktober 100 in Leipzig, Germany. It commemorates the Battle of Leipzig in October 1813, when coalition armies defeated Napoleon’s forces in one of the largest battles fought in Europe before the First World War. Designed by architect Bruno Schmitz, the monument was inaugurated on 18 October 1913, exactly one hundred years after the battle. The granite-faced structure rises to a height of 91 metres and contains a crypt, a vast domed Hall of Fame, monumental guardian figures and an observation platform overlooking Leipzig.
The Monument to the Battle of the Nations has appeared in Schwarzer Samt (1964), Das Monstrum (2001), The Hunt for the Amber Room (2012) and The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes (2023). Its monumental exterior, crypt and cavernous stone interiors have been used for crime, adventure and dystopian scenes.
In Schwarzer Samt (1964), the interior of the Monument to the Battle of the Nations is used for a meeting between security officer Alexander Berg and Manfred Sibelka. Alexander is working undercover as a photographer while investigating a planned act of sabotage at the Leipzig Trade Fair. During their meeting inside the monument, Manfred refers to a required “snapshot”, providing Alexander and the authorities with another clue to the conspirators’ plan.
In Das Monstrum (2001), the Monument to the Battle of the Nations is central to the entire story and gives the film its title. Helene Hempel returns to Leipzig and becomes involved in uncovering a conspiracy by city officials to sell the monument to an American company, which intends to dismantle it and rebuild it in the Californian desert. The monument’s exterior and dark interior spaces appear throughout the investigation, which also involves Helene’s childhood fear of the building and the disappearance of several people within its vaults.
In The Hunt for the Amber Room (2012), Eik Meiers, Katharina Berthold, Justus Zacharias and Mila Marglund follow clues connected to Albert Einstein and Clemens Thieme to the Monument to the Battle of the Nations. Inside the monument, they use a specially created beam of light to reveal the location of a hidden tomb belonging to a relative of physicist Otto von Guericke. Remembering Guericke’s vacuum experiments allows them to open the tomb, where they discover an Enigma cipher machine that provides the next clue in their search for the missing Amber Room.
In The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes (2023), the crypt of the Monument to the Battle of the Nations appears as part of the Capitol. Coriolanus Snow and the other Academy mentors are brought there to meet the shackled tributes assigned to them for the 10th Hunger Games. Snow approaches Lucy Gray Baird while the other mentors and tributes speak beneath the enormous stone figures and death-mask pillars of the crypt. The monument’s towering exterior is also shown later in the film, while other buildings in Berlin were used for the remaining parts of Heavensbee Hall.
