Raiders of the Lost Ark is a 1981 adventure film directed by Steven Spielberg and produced by George Lucas, with Harrison Ford starring as archaeologist Indiana Jones. Set in 1936, the film follows Indy as he races against the Nazis to find the Ark of the Covenant, moving from South America to Nepal, Cairo and beyond in a story that blends pulp serial thrills, mythology, humour and large-scale action. More than almost any other modern adventure film, it helped define the template for globe-trotting treasure-hunt cinema, combining cliff-edge escapes, ancient traps, ruthless villains and a hero who survives as much through grit and improvisation as through pure brilliance.
The film was shot across England, Tunisia, France, Hawaii and parts of the United States, and that mix of locations is a major reason it feels so rich and varied. Tunisia was especially important, standing in for Egypt in the Cairo and desert sequences, with Kairouan used for the city streets and markets, and the Tozeur area and nearby desert landscapes providing the more expansive Tanis material. The opening Peruvian jungle sequence was filmed on Kauaสปi in Hawaii, giving the film its lush rainforest setting, while La Rochelle in France was used for the U-boat base and harbour scenes. Much of the interior work was completed at Elstree Studios in England, including major set-built environments such as the Peruvian temple and the Well of Souls, while the exterior of Indyโs college was filmed at the University of the Pacific in California. Altogether, the production moves from tropical jungle and North African streets to European wartime harbour settings and studio-built ancient tombs, giving the film a much broader physical world than its fast pace might initially suggest.
