Country

Country: Tunisia

Tunisia has a strong screen identity built around its desert landscapes, ancient ruins, fortified towns and Mediterranean coast. The country is especially famous for its connection to “Star Wars”, with locations such as Matmata, Chott el Djerid, Djerba and the desert sets near Tozeur used to create parts of Tatooine. Tunisia has also appeared in “Raiders of the Lost Ark”, where Kairouan stood in for Cairo, and in “The English Patient”, which used desert and city locations including Tozeur, Sfax, Tunis and Mahdia. Monastir, Sousse and Carthage were used for “Monty Python’s Life of Brian”, while the Ribat of Monastir also appeared in “Jesus of Nazareth”. With its mix of Roman sites, Islamic architecture, coastal cities and otherworldly desert scenery, Tunisia remains one of North Africa’s most distinctive filming countries.
