Alnwick Castle is a medieval castle in Northumberland and one of the most recognisable historic fortresses in England. Still inhabited in part by the Duke of Northumberland’s family, it is both a major heritage site and one of Britain’s best-known screen castles. Its battlements, courtyards, and outer bailey have made it especially attractive to productions looking for a grand fortress with a strong visual identity.
Alnwick Castle has appeared in Blackadder (1983), Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (2001), Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002), Downton Abbey (2014–2015 Christmas specials), Transformers: The Last Knight (2017), Dungeons & Dragons: Honour Among Thieves (2023), Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (1991), and Elizabeth (1998). The castle’s own screen-history material highlights it as one of its most important filming locations.
In Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (2001), Alnwick Castle was used for key exterior Hogwarts scenes, including Harry’s first flying lesson and the Quidditch practice area. The castle courtyards and approaches were also used as part of Hogwarts’ outdoor setting.
In Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002), Alnwick Castle returned as Hogwarts. It was again used for exterior school scenes, and the Inner Bailey was used for the sequence involving the flying Ford Anglia.
In Downton Abbey (2014–2015 Christmas specials), Alnwick Castle was used as Brancaster Castle. The location stands in for Lord Sinderby’s grand seat and appears in the Christmas episodes set around the shooting party and family gathering there.
In Transformers: The Last Knight (2017), Alnwick Castle was used as one of the film’s historic British fortress locations. Its architecture suited the film’s mix of medieval legend and large-scale fantasy action.
In Dungeons & Dragons: Honour Among Thieves (2023), Alnwick Castle was one of the recent fantasy productions to use the site. Its fortified exterior and historic setting fit naturally into the film’s medieval adventure world.
In Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (1991), Alnwick Castle appears in the scene where the Bishop of Hereford is thrown from a window into the castle courtyard. It is a brief but memorable use of the location.
In Elizabeth (1998), Alnwick Castle was one of the historic English locations used during the production. Its architecture made it a suitable setting for the film’s Tudor-period world.
In The Blackadder (1983), Alnwick Castle was used as King Richard IV’s castle in the first series. Its battlements, courtyards, and exterior views appear throughout the medieval setting of the show, making it one of the series’ main real-world locations.
