Ardkinglas House

Ardkinglas House is a historic country house on the eastern shore of Loch Fyne, near Cairndow in Argyll, Scotland. The present house was designed by Sir Robert Lorimer and completed in the early 20th century, replacing earlier houses and castle buildings on the estate. Set among woodland, gardens and dramatic lochside scenery, Ardkinglas combines Scottish baronial architecture with a secluded Highland atmosphere, making it a natural filming location for productions needing an aristocratic house, remote estate or romantic Scottish landscape.

The house and estate have appeared in several films and television productions, including “The Crow Road” (1996), “My Life So Far” (1999), “The Rocket Post” (2004), “The Water Horse: Legend of the Deep” (2007), Max Manus (2008) “Sense8” (2015–2018), “Behind Her Eyes” (2021) and “The Diplomat” (2023–). In many of these productions, Ardkinglas is used not just as a beautiful building, but as a place that suggests family history, secrecy, wealth or isolation.

In “The Crow Road” (1996), Ardkinglas House is used as Gaineamh Castle. The Scottish setting fits the series’ mixture of family mystery, memory and dark humour, with the house providing the kind of old, imposing family seat that suits Iain Banks’ story.

In “My Life So Far” (1999), Ardkinglas House appears as part of the Scottish estate world where the young Fraser Pettigrew grows up. The film uses the house’s grand but lived-in atmosphere to evoke an eccentric aristocratic household in the 1920s, with family tensions, childhood discovery and changing social values playing out against the backdrop of a large Highland home.

In “The Rocket Post” (2004), Ardkinglas House is used as the Laird’s house. Although the story is connected to the Western Isles, the production used Ardkinglas to provide the aristocratic mainland setting needed for the film’s period atmosphere.

In “The Water Horse: Legend of the Deep” (2007), Ardkinglas is one of the key Scottish locations. The film is set around Loch Ness during the Second World War, but Ardkinglas and its Loch Fyne setting help create the film’s secluded Highland world. The house and estate give the story a grand, slightly mysterious setting for the boy who discovers the creature that becomes the legendary water horse.

In Max Manus (2008), Ardkinglas House is used during the Scotland section of the film. Max Manus and other Norwegian resistance fighters are connected to British training and operations during the Second World War, and the Scottish country-house setting gives these scenes a very different atmosphere from the occupied Oslo sequences. Ardkinglas’ secluded estate, grand architecture and surrounding landscape fit the film’s shift from urban resistance work in Norway to the wider Allied network that supports Manus and his fellow saboteurs.

In “Sense8” (2015–2018), Ardkinglas Estate appears in the episode “Isolated Above, Connected Below” as the Old Man of Hoy’s estate in Scotland. The location’s remote, wooded and lochside character fits the series’ use of real international locations, giving the Scottish scenes a distinct sense of place.

In “Behind Her Eyes” (2021), Ardkinglas House is used for the Scottish estate connected to Adele’s past. The house’s isolation and grand interiors suit the psychological mystery of the series, where memory, trauma and hidden motives gradually become more important than the apparently ordinary domestic setting.

In “The Diplomat” (2023–), Ardkinglas appears as one of the Scottish locations used in the series’ second season. The show uses historic houses and estates to create a world of diplomacy, political power and private negotiations, and Ardkinglas fits naturally into that visual language with its formal architecture and secluded setting.
