Grand Bazaar is one of Istanbul’s most famous historic landmarks and one of the largest covered markets in the world. Known in Turkish as Kapalıçarşı, the bazaar dates back to the Ottoman period and forms a dense network of covered streets, gates, courtyards, shops and vaulted passages in the Fatih district. Its maze-like layout, colourful shopfronts, jewellery stalls, carpets, lanterns, textiles and constant movement have made it one of the most recognisable screen locations in Istanbul. The bazaar has also been used as a stand-in for other historic market districts, especially in films set elsewhere in the Middle East.

Grand Bazaar has appeared in several international films, especially spy thrillers and action films that use its crowded passages, entrances and roofscape for movement, pursuit and surveillance. Films connected to the location include From Russia with Love (1963), The International (2009), Argo (2012), Taken 2 (2012), Skyfall (2012), Inferno (2016) and Charlie’s Angels (2019). The bazaar is sometimes shown as Istanbul itself, while in other productions it is dressed to represent another city.

In From Russia with Love (1963), Grand Bazaar appears during James Bond’s Istanbul mission. The film uses the bazaar as part of the city’s espionage landscape, where crowded public places, historic landmarks and hidden routes become part of Bond’s investigation. The market setting fits the film’s Cold War atmosphere, with Istanbul presented as a meeting point between Europe and Asia, tourism and secrecy, everyday trade and international intrigue.

In The International (2009), Grand Bazaar appears during the Istanbul section of the film. The crowded market environment fits the film’s conspiracy-thriller tone, giving the Istanbul scenes a sense of movement, density and surveillance. The bazaar’s covered passages and busy commercial atmosphere help place the story inside one of the city’s most recognisable historic spaces.

In Argo (2012), Grand Bazaar stands in for Tehran’s covered bazaar. Since the production could not film in Iran, Istanbul was used for several scenes set in revolutionary-era Tehran. The market streets and shops inside Grand Bazaar were dressed to represent an Iranian bazaar, making the location part of the film’s recreation of the tense atmosphere surrounding the American embassy crisis.

In Taken 2 (2012), Grand Bazaar appears during the Istanbul action sequences. Bryan Mills moves through the city while trying to protect his family, and the bazaar is used as part of the film’s chase geography. The market and roof areas give the sequence a dense, layered setting, with the old commercial district turned into an action location.

In Skyfall (2012), Grand Bazaar is used in the opening chase sequence. James Bond and Patrice move through Istanbul before the pursuit rises onto the roof of the bazaar, where motorcycles race across the old market structure. The sequence turns Grand Bazaar into one of the film’s major action locations, using both the historic market setting and the roofscape above it.

In Inferno (2016), Grand Bazaar appears during the Istanbul section of the Robert Langdon story. The film’s final act moves through several historic parts of the city, and the bazaar becomes part of the route through Istanbul’s dense old centre. Its covered passages and surrounding market streets fit the film’s race-against-time structure, where clues, crowds and historic architecture are closely tied together.

In Charlie’s Angels (2019), Grand Bazaar appears as part of the film’s Istanbul material. The location is used for the film’s international action setting, where the city’s historic market environment becomes part of the global spy-adventure landscape. The bazaar’s recognisable interiors and busy atmosphere help give the Istanbul scenes a clear sense of place.
