Þingvellir National Park is a protected historic and geological area in southwestern Iceland, about 45 kilometres northeast of Reykjavík. It is one of the country’s most important landmarks, both because it was the site of the Alþingi, Iceland’s early parliament, and because it lies in the rift valley between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates. Its lava fields, cliffs, fissures, and open volcanic landscape give it a stark and highly distinctive appearance.

Þingvellir National Park appears in Game of Thrones (2011–2019). In the series, the park’s dramatic rifts and rocky paths are used for parts of the Vale and for terrain in the North, making it one of the most recognisable Icelandic locations in the show.

In Game of Thrones (2011–2019), Þingvellir is used for the approach to the Bloody Gate, with the Almannagjá gorge standing in for the narrow passage leading into the Vale of Arryn. The location appears in the separate journeys of Sansa Stark with Littlefinger and Arya Stark with the Hound, where the steep rock walls and fissured landscape give the setting a severe and isolated character.
