Lebowski Bar

Lebowski Bar is a film-themed bar and restaurant at Laugavegur 20a in central Reykjavík, Iceland. It opened in April 2012 in premises previously occupied by the restaurant and nightclub Oliver and takes its name and visual identity from the Coen brothers’ cult comedy The Big Lebowski (1998). The interior was designed around an exaggerated American retro aesthetic, incorporating references to bowling alleys, 1950s diners and the characters and imagery of the film. White Russian cocktails, the preferred drink of Jeff Bridges’ character “The Dude”, became one of the bar’s signatures, with numerous variations offered on the menu. The present interior is divided into several themed areas, including a bowling-inspired section, a classic diner and an upstairs space drawing on 1960s design.

Lebowski Bar has appeared in The Flight Attendant (2020–2022). The bar is featured in the third episode of the second season, “The Reykjavík Ice Sculpture Festival Is Lovely This Time of Year”, during Cassie Bowden’s search through Reykjavík for her former colleague Megan Briscoe.

In The Flight Attendant (2020–2022), Lebowski Bar appears during the season-two episode “The Reykjavík Ice Sculpture Festival Is Lovely This Time of Year”. After secretly flying to Iceland because she believes Megan is hiding in Reykjavík, Cassie begins revisiting bars and clubs that the two women frequented together during earlier trips. Lebowski Bar is one of the real Reykjavík establishments included in the resulting montage as Cassie moves from one familiar drinking spot to another, showing Megan’s photograph and searching unsuccessfully for information about her whereabouts. The sequence is particularly significant for Cassie because she is now sober, and returning to places associated with her former drinking life increasingly tests her recovery. Her search continues through several Reykjavík bars before she eventually discovers Megan working at the fictional Blue Sincerely later in the episode.
