Royal Palace of Caserta, or Reggia di Caserta, is one of the grandest royal residences in Europe. Located in Caserta, near Naples, the palace was built for the Bourbon kings of Naples and is known for its enormous scale, monumental façade, royal apartments, grand staircase, chapel, throne room and formal gardens stretching far behind the building. Its combination of symmetry, marble, ceremonial interiors and imperial grandeur has made it a highly useful filming location, especially when productions need a palace, government building or Vatican-like setting with impressive interiors.

Royal Palace of Caserta has appeared in several major productions, including “Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace” (1999), Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones (2002), Mission: Impossible III (2006), “Angels & Demons” (2009), “The Two Popes” (2019), “Conclave” (2024) and “The Empire” (2024). The palace is especially famous for two screen identities: as the interior of Theed Palace on Naboo in the “Star Wars” prequels, and as a stand-in for the Vatican in several modern thrillers.

In “Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace” (1999), Royal Palace of Caserta is used as the interior of Theed Palace on Naboo. The palace’s grand staircase, marble halls and formal corridors become part of Queen Amidala’s royal residence, giving Naboo a visual identity that feels elegant, ceremonial and old-world. The real architecture fits the planet’s peaceful and aristocratic image, contrasting sharply with the invasion and political crisis that drive the story.

In Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones (2002), Royal Palace of Caserta returns as the interior of Theed Palace on Naboo. This time the palace is connected more strongly to Padmé Amidala and Anakin Skywalker’s return to Naboo, where the setting becomes part of the film’s romantic and political atmosphere. The familiar halls and staircases help connect the sequel back to the world introduced in “The Phantom Menace” (1999), while continuing to present Naboo as one of the most refined and visually beautiful places in the “Star Wars” universe.

In Mission: Impossible III (2006), Royal Palace of Caserta stands in for the Vatican. Ethan Hunt and his team infiltrate the location during their operation to capture Owen Davian, using the palace’s grand interiors as part of the high-security Vatican environment. The enormous halls, staircases and official-looking spaces make the setting convincing as a seat of power, while also giving the sequence the scale needed for a major spy-film operation.

In “Angels & Demons” (2009), Royal Palace of Caserta is again used for scenes set in the Vatican. The film follows Robert Langdon through Rome and Vatican-related locations during a race against time, and the palace’s ceremonial interiors provide a convincing substitute for restricted Vatican spaces. Its grand staircase and formal halls help create the sense of religious and political authority surrounding the conclave and the wider crisis in the film.

In “The Two Popes” (2019), Royal Palace of Caserta is used as one of the locations standing in for Vatican interiors. The film centres on conversations between Pope Benedict XVI and the future Pope Francis, and the palace’s formal rooms help create the atmosphere of institutional weight, tradition and quiet power surrounding the papacy. The location works because it can suggest the Vatican without needing to rely only on obvious religious imagery.

In “Conclave” (2024), Royal Palace of Caserta once again becomes part of a Vatican world, this time for a political and religious thriller about the election of a new pope. The palace’s grand rooms and corridors suit the film’s atmosphere of ceremony, secrecy and internal power struggles. Its use here continues the building’s screen identity as one of cinema’s most useful stand-ins for restricted Vatican interiors.

In “The Empire” (2024), Royal Palace of Caserta is used in a more unusual way, as part of Bruno Dumont’s science-fiction world. The palace’s throne room, chapel and gardens give the film a strange mixture of grandeur and unreality, allowing the historic royal residence to become part of a story involving cosmic forces and earthly power. This shows how flexible the location can be: the same architecture that can play Naboo or the Vatican can also support a more surreal science-fiction setting.
