Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones is a 2002 space opera written and directed by George Lucas, and the second chapter in the Star Wars prequel trilogy. Set ten years after The Phantom Menace, the film follows the galaxy as it moves closer to war, with Obi-Wan Kenobi investigating a secret clone army while Anakin Skywalker is assigned to protect Senator Padmé Amidala. The film is especially important in the larger Star Wars saga because it develops Anakin and Padmé’s relationship, reveals the origins of the Clone Wars and pushes the Republic closer to the rise of the Empire. It also marked one of the franchise’s biggest steps into digital production, with extensive green-screen work and computer-generated environments shaping much of its visual style.

The film was shot through a mix of studio production in Australia and location work in Tunisia, Italy and Spain. Fox Studios Australia in Sydney served as the main production base, where many of the film’s digital environments, interiors and large-scale sets were created. Tunisia returned as Tatooine, including the Hotel Sidi Driss in Matmata for the Lars homestead, connecting the film directly back to the original Star Wars (1977). Italy provided some of the most romantic Naboo settings, especially Villa del Balbianello on Lake Como, used for Padmé’s lake retreat and the secret wedding, while the nearby Lake Como landscape also appears in the meadow material. The Royal Palace of Caserta again contributed to the Theed palace interiors, and Plaza de España in Seville supplied one of Naboo’s most recognisable exterior settings, with its sweeping colonnades, canal and bridges standing in for the planet’s elegant civic architecture. Together, these locations give the film a contrast between artificial galactic capitals, desert homesteads and unusually graceful real-world architecture, helping Naboo and Tatooine feel physically distinct even inside a heavily digital production.
