Biester Palace, also known as Palácio Biester or Chalet Biester, is a nineteenth-century mansion in Sintra, Portugal. Designed as a summer residence and surrounded by romantic gardens on the hillside above the town, it is known for its richly decorated interiors, neo-Gothic features, and its position close to other major Sintra landmarks such as Quinta da Regaleira and the road up to Pena Palace.
Biester Palace appears in The Ninth Gate (1999). It is the screen location most clearly associated with the palace, and the building is specifically identified as one of the film’s Portuguese locations. In the film, the palace is used as the mansion of book collector Victor Fargas.
In The Ninth Gate (1999), Biester Palace is used for the scenes at Victor Fargas’s residence, where Dean Corso visits during his investigation into the occult book at the centre of the story. The palace’s dark interiors, elaborate woodwork, and mysterious atmosphere make it a strong fit for one of the film’s most overtly gothic locations.
