Back to the Future Part II is a 1989 science-fiction adventure comedy directed by Robert Zemeckis and the direct sequel to Back to the Future (1985). The film begins immediately after Marty McFly returns from 1955, only for Doc Brown to take Marty and Jennifer forward to 2015 to prevent a problem involving Marty’s future family. The story then becomes more complicated when Biff Tannen steals the sports almanac and creates an alternate 1985, forcing Marty and Doc back to 1955 to repair the timeline without interfering with the events of the first film. Compared with the original, the sequel is more structurally ambitious, using the same town and characters across multiple timelines while turning Hill Valley into a playground for alternate futures, distorted nostalgia and comic time-travel consequences.

The film was shot mainly in California, with Universal Studios’ Courthouse Square backlot again serving as the centre of Hill Valley in its 1955, 1985, alternate-1985 and 2015 forms. This reuse of the same square is crucial to the film’s identity, as the familiar courthouse, clock tower and surrounding streets are redesigned again and again to show how time, wealth and corruption reshape the town. Other Los Angeles-area locations helped expand the world beyond the backlot: Whittier High School again stood in for Hill Valley High, Puente Hills Mall in the City of Industry returned as the Lone Pine Mall, and Griffith Park was used for the tunnel chase sequence. The 2015 Hilldale neighbourhood was filmed in El Monte, while other suburban and street locations around Southern California were used for the future and alternate-timeline material. Together, these locations allow the film to create a layered version of Hill Valley where the same places are constantly revisited, altered and reinterpreted across time.
