Centre Pompidou

Centre Pompidou

The Centre Pompidou, more fully the Centre national d’art et de culture Georges-Pompidou, also known as the Pompidou Centre in English and colloquially as Beaubourg, is a building complex in Paris, France. It was designed in the style of high-tech architecture by the architectural team of Richard Rogers, Su Rogers and Renzo Piano, along with Gianfranco Franchini. It is named after Georges Pompidou, the President of France from 1969 to 1974 who commissioned the building, and was officially opened on 31 January 1977 by President Valรฉry Giscard d’Estaing.

The Centre Pompidou served as a primary filming location for the 1979 James Bond film Moonraker, specifically representing the interior of Hugo Draxโ€™s hi-tech California space-shuttle complex. The 5th floor, including the long glass tube (escalator) and Dr. Holly Goodhead’s office, was used for these scenes. The high-tech, exposed-pipe aesthetic of the building matched the futuristic, industrial look required for the film’s space center.

The Centre Pompidou served as a key filming location for the TV special Alice Cooper in Paris (1982), specifically featuring a performance of “Generation Landslide ’81”. The iconic, inside-out architecture of the museum provided a unique, industrial backdrop for the rock performance.
