Never Say Never Again (1983) is a James Bond spy film directed by Irvin Kershner and starring Sean Connery in his seventh and final appearance as James Bond. The film was produced independently of Eon Productions and is therefore not part of the official Eon Bond series. Its story is based on Ian Fleming’s Thunderball and follows Bond as he is called back into action after the criminal organisation SPECTRE steals two nuclear warheads. Klaus Maria Brandauer plays SPECTRE operative Maximilian Largo, with Kim Basinger as Domino Petachi, Barbara Carrera as Fatima Blush and Max von Sydow as Ernst Stavro Blofeld.
Never Say Never Again (1983) was filmed extensively on the French Riviera, in the Bahamas and in England, with additional filming in Spain and Florida. Production began in southern France in September 1982, with Nice serving as the crew’s main base. Locations included Nice Côte d’Azur Airport, Villefranche-sur-Mer, Fort Carré in Antibes, Monte Carlo and several streets around Menton used for Bond’s motorcycle chase. Casino de Monte-Carlo appears as the casino where Bond meets Largo, while the Dining Room at Waddesdon Manor in Buckinghamshire was used for the interior in which the two men play the computer game Domination. Luton Hoo in Bedfordshire became the Shrublands health clinic, while further interiors and the large underwater cavern set for the Tears of Allah finale were constructed at Elstree Studios. In the Bahamas, filming centred on Nassau and New Providence Island, including the British Colonial Hotel, Nassau Harbour and Clifton Pier, where both underwater scenes and scenes involving Largo’s operations were filmed. Additional underwater photography was carried out at Silver Springs in Florida, while locations around Almería in southern Spain were also used for the film’s later sequences.
