The Flight Attendant (2020–2022) is an American dark comedy thriller developed by Steve Yockey, based on Chris Bohjalian’s novel of the same name. Kaley Cuoco stars as Cassie Bowden, a hard-partying flight attendant whose life collapses after she wakes up in a Bangkok hotel room beside a dead passenger, Alex Sokolov, with no memory of what happened the night before. The first season follows Cassie as she returns to New York and tries to piece together the murder while avoiding the police, her employer, dangerous strangers and the consequences of her own alcoholism. The second season moves Cassie to Los Angeles, where she is sober and secretly working as a CIA asset, only to become entangled in another international conspiracy. The series mixes murder mystery, psychological drama, black comedy and spy thriller, using Cassie’s fractured memory and imagined conversations with the dead Alex as part of its storytelling style.
The Flight Attendant was filmed across several major locations, with New York, Bangkok, Rome, Los Angeles, Berlin and Reykjavík forming the main geography of the series. Season one is strongly tied to New York City, where Cassie’s home life, airline work, investigation and self-destructive nightlife all unfold. The production used places such as Foley Square, Penn Station, Hotel Chantelle on the Lower East Side, Newtown Creek, the New York Aquarium, SHI in Long Island City, Hudson Yards and the area around the Vessel, which appears near Alex Sokolov’s apartment. Some apartment, hotel-room, airplane and airport interiors were created or redressed on sets, but the series also uses real international locations to give Cassie’s life the feeling of constant movement. Bangkok is central to the opening mystery, with the Chao Phraya River, Wat Arun, night-market material, the Picnic Hotel in Rangnam and Anantara Siam Bangkok connected to Cassie and Alex’s night together. Rome appears through Le Méridien Visconti in Prati, Piazza Navona, the Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi, Via dei Coronari and other city material tied to Cassie’s visits to Enrico. Season two shifts the production and the story westward, placing Cassie in Los Angeles before sending her into further international trouble in Berlin and Iceland. Reykjavík, Sky Lagoon, Reykjanes cliffs and Keflavík are among the Icelandic locations connected to the second season. The result is a series where location is part of Cassie’s instability: airports, hotel rooms, bars, offices, night streets, foreign cities and half-remembered rooms all blur together as her glamorous flight-attendant life becomes a dangerous map of guilt, addiction and espionage.
