Kaley Cuoco

Kaley Cuoco is an American actress and producer born Kaley Christine Cuoco on 30 November 1985 in Camarillo, California. She grew up in nearby Oxnard, a coastal community in Ventura County, north-west of Los Angeles, with her parents, Gary Carmine Cuoco and Layne Ann Wingate, and her younger sister, Briana. Her father worked as a real-estate agent, while her mother concentrated on raising the children and supporting their interests. Her paternal family is of Italian descent, while her mother’s ancestry includes English and German roots. Cuoco developed an interest in performing while still very young, appearing in television commercials and modelling assignments before she entered primary school. Her parents encouraged her ambitions but also insisted that she maintain interests outside the entertainment industry. Tennis became particularly important during her childhood, and she began playing at the age of three. She subsequently competed in junior tournaments and became a nationally ranked amateur player, considering the possibility of pursuing the sport professionally before deciding to concentrate on acting.

Cuoco’s introduction to acting came through commercials for products including Barbie dolls and Oscar Mayer, followed by small television and film roles. She made an early screen appearance in the television thriller Quicksand: No Escape (1992), starring Donald Sutherland and Tim Matheson, and subsequently appeared in the science-fiction film Virtuosity (1995), alongside Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe. Her television credits during the 1990s included Northern Exposure, My So-Called Life, Ellen and 7th Heaven, giving her experience in both comedy and drama. She also appeared in the romantic comedy Picture Perfect (1997), starring Jennifer Aniston and Jay Mohr. Much of this work was based around Los Angeles, allowing Cuoco to continue living with her family in Ventura County while regularly travelling to studios and production facilities throughout the metropolitan area. As her acting commitments increased, she began studying at home rather than attending a conventional school. She later explained that the arrangement enabled her to continue working without abandoning her education, and she completed her secondary studies at sixteen.

One of her first substantial roles came in Growing Up Brady (2000), a television film based on Barry Williams’s memoir about the making of the American sitcom The Brady Bunch. Cuoco played Maureen McCormick, the actress who had portrayed Marcia Brady in the original programme. The film examined the professional and personal experiences of the young performers whose lives became closely associated with their television characters during the 1970s. Cuoco also appeared in the Disney Channel television film Alley Cats Strike (2000), about a group of teenagers competing in a bowling championship, and the sitcom Ladies Man (1999–2001), starring Alfred Molina. These projects introduced her to longer filming schedules and recurring television work, while her experience of growing up in front of the camera increasingly resembled that of the young performers she portrayed. By the beginning of the 2000s, she was regularly auditioning for substantial television roles and had begun attracting attention from casting directors working on network sitcoms.

Her breakthrough came when she was cast as Bridget Hennessy in 8 Simple Rules (2002–2005), an ABC family sitcom created by Tracy Gamble and based on W. Bruce Cameron’s book 8 Simple Rules for Dating My Teenage Daughter. John Ritter starred as Paul Hennessy, a sportswriter attempting to raise three children alongside his wife Cate, played by Katey Sagal. Cuoco portrayed Bridget, the eldest daughter, whose interest in fashion, dating and social activities regularly brings her into conflict with her father’s protective behaviour. Amy Davidson played her younger sister Kerry, while Martin Spanjers portrayed their brother Rory. The programme was filmed at Walt Disney Studios on South Buena Vista Street in Burbank, where the Hennessy family’s home was recreated on soundstages. Cuoco was sixteen when the series premiered in September 2002, and the role gave her the first sustained national recognition of her career. Working alongside Ritter and Sagal also provided an opportunity to learn from two experienced television performers, particularly through the programme’s emphasis on physical comedy and the relationship between family members.

The production underwent a devastating change when Ritter became seriously ill during rehearsals on 11 September 2003. He was taken to Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Burbank, where he died that evening from complications of an aortic dissection, aged fifty-four. The sudden loss deeply affected Cuoco and the other cast members, particularly because Ritter had become an important mentor during her early professional development. ABC temporarily suspended production before deciding to incorporate the actor’s death into the story. The episode “Goodbye”, broadcast in November 2003, depicted the Hennessy family’s reaction to the unexpected death of their father. Cuoco later recalled that filming the episode was particularly difficult because the performers were expressing genuine grief rather than simply interpreting a fictional tragedy. The programme continued with James Garner and David Spade joining the cast, but its emphasis gradually shifted away from the original relationship between Paul and his teenage daughters. 8 Simple Rules ended in April 2005 after three seasons, leaving Cuoco established as a recognisable young television actress.

Following the conclusion of 8 Simple Rules, Cuoco joined the final season of Charmed (1998–2006), the supernatural drama starring Alyssa Milano, Holly Marie Combs and Rose McGowan. She played Billie Jenkins, a young witch who becomes an apprentice to the Halliwell sisters before discovering that her missing older sister, Christy, has become involved with powerful demonic forces. The series was set in San Francisco, but most of its production took place in Los Angeles. During Cuoco’s season, filming was based at Paramount Studios on Melrose Avenue in Hollywood, where the interiors of the Halliwell family home and other recurring locations had been constructed. The exterior of the fictional manor was represented by the historic Innes House at 1329 Carroll Avenue in the Angelino Heights neighbourhood of Los Angeles, a nineteenth-century residence used throughout much of the programme’s run. Cuoco appeared in all twenty-two episodes of the eighth season, gaining experience with a production involving elaborate costumes, supernatural action and visual effects. She also continued voice acting, providing performances in animated series including Brandy & Mr. Whiskers and Bratz.

Her most internationally recognised role followed when producers Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady cast her as Penny in The Big Bang Theory (2007–2019). The CBS sitcom follows two physicists, Leonard Hofstadter and Sheldon Cooper, who share an apartment in Pasadena, California, and their relationships with a group of scientifically minded friends. Johnny Galecki and Jim Parsons portrayed Leonard and Sheldon, while Simon Helberg and Kunal Nayyar played their colleagues Howard Wolowitz and Raj Koothrappali. Cuoco’s character is an aspiring actress from Nebraska who moves into the apartment opposite Leonard and Sheldon, initially supporting herself by working at the Cheesecake Factory. Although Penny has relatively little knowledge of science, her social confidence and practical understanding of everyday relationships provide a contrast to the intellectual interests and social difficulties of the other characters. Cuoco was twenty-one when the series premiered in September 2007, and her performance became central to its success.

Although The Big Bang Theory was set in Pasadena, home to the California Institute of Technology, its principal filming location was Warner Bros. Studios in Burbank. Production was based on Stage 25 at the studio complex on Warner Boulevard, where the interiors of Leonard and Sheldon’s apartment, Penny’s apartment, the shared hallway and the deliberately inoperative lift were constructed. Additional sets represented university laboratories, offices and the cafeteria associated with Caltech, while exterior footage of Pasadena and other Southern California locations was used to establish the fictional setting. The series employed a traditional multi-camera sitcom format, recording performances before a studio audience and allowing the cast to develop their timing through rehearsals and audience reactions. Cuoco spent twelve seasons working on these sets, which became a particularly familiar professional environment during her twenties and early thirties. She later described the production as an extended family, with the regular cast and crew maintaining relationships that continued beyond the conclusion of the series.

The programme’s developing storylines gradually expanded Penny’s character beyond her original role as the attractive neighbour who finds the scientists’ behaviour amusing. Her relationship with Leonard became one of the series’ principal emotional threads, moving through periods of friendship, romance and separation before their eventual marriage. Penny also developed a close friendship with Bernadette Rostenkowski, played by Melissa Rauch, and Amy Farrah Fowler, portrayed by Mayim Bialik, whose arrival substantially changed the programme’s social relationships. Cuoco’s professional life was interrupted by a serious accident in September 2010, when she fell from a horse while riding in the Los Angeles area. The frightened animal subsequently landed on her leg, causing multiple fractures and injuries that required emergency surgery. Doctors initially warned that the damage was so severe that amputation might be necessary, although the operation ultimately allowed her leg to be saved. Cuoco spent nearly three weeks in hospital and temporarily withdrew from The Big Bang Theory, missing two episodes before returning to work. The production subsequently adjusted its filming arrangements while she recovered. Her longstanding interest in equestrian sports had developed alongside her childhood involvement in tennis, and she had become an enthusiastic rider who regularly participated in show-jumping competitions. Despite the accident, she continued riding after recovering, regarding horses as an important part of her life outside acting. The experience also strengthened her interest in animal welfare and the care of injured or abandoned animals.

The enormous success of The Big Bang Theory gave Cuoco financial independence and increasing influence within the entertainment industry. In 2014, she joined Galecki and Parsons in negotiating new contracts that reportedly provided salaries approaching one million dollars per episode, placing them among the highest-paid actors working in American television. On 29 October that year, Cuoco received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 6621 Hollywood Boulevard, close to the star honouring John Ritter. Lorre and several members of The Big Bang Theory cast participated in the ceremony, recognising both her commercial success and the professional relationships that had developed throughout her career. Outside television, she continued accepting film roles, including the animated family comedy Hop (2011) and the romantic comedy The Wedding Ringer (2015), directed by Jeremy Garelick and starring Kevin Hart and Josh Gad. In the latter, Cuoco portrayed Gretchen Palmer, whose approaching wedding becomes central to an elaborate deception involving her fiancé and a professional best man. The film was shot around Los Angeles, including locations in Santa Monica, Marina del Rey, Torrance and Hollywood.

Her personal life also changed during these years. Cuoco had previously been in relationships with actors including Johnny Galecki, whom she dated privately during the early seasons of The Big Bang Theory. They separated amicably and continued working together throughout the remainder of the programme. She subsequently began a relationship with professional tennis player Ryan Sweeting, whom she married on 31 December 2013 during a ceremony at Hummingbird Nest Ranch in Simi Valley, California. Their relationship attracted considerable attention because of their different professional backgrounds and Cuoco’s growing celebrity. The couple announced their separation in September 2015, and their divorce was finalised the following year. Cuoco later discussed the difficulty of experiencing the breakdown of a marriage while working on one of the world’s most widely watched television programmes. She nevertheless maintained her professional commitments and continued developing an increasingly independent life through her friendships, family relationships and equestrian activities.

Her interest in horses became particularly important when she met American show jumper Karl Cook, the son of businessman Scott Cook, during an equestrian event in 2016. The two developed a relationship through their shared enthusiasm for riding and competition, and Cook proposed in November 2017. They married on 30 June 2018 at Cook’s Pomponio horse ranch in Southern California, with a ceremony held among the property’s stables and outdoor riding facilities. Several of Cuoco’s Big Bang Theory colleagues attended, including Johnny Galecki and Mayim Bialik. In September 2021, they announced their separation, and their divorce was finalised in June 2022. Cuoco subsequently described the period as emotionally difficult, particularly because it coincided with demanding professional commitments and major changes in her acting career.

During the final seasons of The Big Bang Theory, Cuoco began considering how to develop a career beyond the character of Penny. In October 2017, she established Yes, Norman Productions, a film and television production company named after one of her beloved rescue dogs. The company entered a development agreement with Warner Bros. Television and began acquiring material for future projects. One of Cuoco’s first major acquisitions was the screen rights to Chris Bohjalian’s novel The Flight Attendant, a psychological thriller about an airline employee who awakens in a hotel room beside a murdered passenger. Cuoco became interested in adapting the book as a television series, recognising that its central character offered opportunities to explore subjects considerably darker than those associated with her sitcom work. She collaborated with producer Greg Berlanti and his production company to develop the project, becoming involved in decisions concerning its adaptation, casting and overall creative direction. The arrangement allowed her to participate as an executive producer as well as the leading actress, giving her greater responsibility for the development and completion of a substantial television production.

The Big Bang Theory concluded on 16 May 2019 with a two-part finale that brought the relationships between the principal characters to a conclusion. Penny’s story ended with the revelation that she and Leonard were expecting a child, providing a final development in a relationship that had begun when she moved into the apartment opposite him twelve years earlier. Cuoco described the final recordings as emotionally difficult, particularly because the production had occupied much of her adult life. The sets at Warner Bros. Studios, where she had worked since the age of twenty-one, were dismantled or preserved for studio exhibitions, and several became part of the Warner Bros. Studio Tour Hollywood. The conclusion of the series also allowed Cuoco to concentrate more fully on producing, with The Flight Attendant already moving towards production. Rather than immediately accepting another conventional sitcom, she chose a project involving crime, psychological instability and complicated questions surrounding alcohol dependence.

The Flight Attendant (2020–2022), developed by Steve Yockey for HBO Max, starred Cuoco as Cassandra “Cassie” Bowden, an international flight attendant whose drinking and impulsive relationships repeatedly place her in dangerous situations. After spending the night with a passenger in Bangkok, she awakens beside his murdered body and becomes involved in an investigation that follows her across several countries. The cast included Michiel Huisman, Zosia Mamet, Rosie Perez, T. R. Knight and Michelle Gomez. The production began filming in 2019, with substantial location work in Bangkok, Thailand, where Cuoco participated in scenes involving the city’s streets, hotels, markets and waterways. The Chao Phraya River and surrounding riverfront became important settings for Cassie’s activities, while other sequences were filmed around central Bangkok. The production subsequently moved to Rome, Italy, where locations included Piazza Navona, Via dei Coronari and the Prati neighbourhood. Le Méridien Visconti hotel on Via Federico Cesi represented Cassie’s accommodation, while scenes involving her Italian acquaintance Enrico were filmed around restaurants and streets near the historic city centre.

The production returned to New York for much of its interior filming, with studio facilities and locations around Manhattan and White Plains representing Cassie’s home, workplace and encounters with investigators. The hotel suite where she repeatedly imagines conversations with the murdered passenger was constructed on a New York soundstage, allowing the filmmakers to develop elaborate sequences reflecting her confusion and fragmented memory. Filming was interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020, forcing the company to suspend work before completing the remaining episodes later that year under strict health precautions. Cuoco’s responsibilities as an executive producer became particularly important during this period, as she worked with the production team to adapt schedules and complete the series despite travel restrictions. The Flight Attendant premiered on HBO Max in November 2020 and received a strong critical response. Cuoco earned nominations for both a Golden Globe and a Primetime Emmy Award for her performance, while the series was also nominated for Outstanding Comedy Series at the Emmy Awards. The recognition represented a significant professional achievement following more than a decade associated with a single sitcom character.

A second season of The Flight Attendant premiered in April 2022, relocating much of the story and production from New York to Los Angeles. Cassie had moved to California and was attempting to maintain sobriety while becoming involved in a new international conspiracy. Sharon Stone joined the cast as her mother, while other new performers included Mae Martin and Shohreh Aghdashloo. Production took place around Los Angeles, with additional sequences filmed in Berlin, Germany, and Reykjavík, Iceland. The change of setting allowed the filmmakers to explore a different stage in Cassie’s personal life while retaining the psychological and comic elements of the first season. Cuoco again served as an executive producer and received another Primetime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series. The programme concluded after two seasons, with Cuoco subsequently explaining that she regarded the story as complete and wanted to concentrate on developing other projects rather than continuing indefinitely.

Her professional activities had already expanded into animation through Harley Quinn (2019–), an adult superhero comedy based on the DC Comics character. Cuoco provided the voice of Dr Harleen Quinzel, a former psychiatrist who abandons her relationship with the Joker and attempts to establish herself as an independent criminal figure in Gotham City. The series also featured Lake Bell as Poison Ivy, Alan Tudyk as the Joker and Clayface, and Ron Funches as King Shark. Cuoco served as an executive producer through Yes, Norman Productions, working with Warner Bros. Animation and the programme’s creative team. Her younger sister, Briana, also participated, providing the voice of Barbara Gordon, who eventually becomes Batgirl. The series premiered on DC Universe in November 2019 before moving to HBO Max, developing a following through its combination of violent comedy, character relationships and unconventional interpretations of established comic-book figures. Unlike her live-action productions, Harley Quinn required Cuoco to perform primarily in recording studios, allowing her to continue working on the programme alongside film and television commitments in different countries.

She also returned to romantic comedy and action cinema through projects that allowed her to work with performers outside her established television collaborations. In The Man from Toronto (2022), directed by Patrick Hughes, she appeared alongside Kevin Hart and Woody Harrelson in a story about a man mistakenly identified as an international assassin. Although the story involves several American locations, production took place primarily around Toronto, Ontario, including Milton and neighbouring communities, after the original filming arrangements were disrupted by the pandemic. Cuoco subsequently starred opposite Pete Davidson in Meet Cute (2022), directed by Alex Lehmann. She played Sheila, a woman who discovers a time machine and repeatedly returns to the evening when she first meets a man named Gary. The film was shot around New York City during August 2021, using restaurants, bars and streets in Manhattan to depict the couple’s changing encounters. The project allowed Cuoco to move between romantic comedy and darker material, particularly as Sheila’s repeated attempts to alter the relationship reveal difficulties she has been attempting to avoid.

Another substantial film project was Role Play (2024), directed by Thomas Vincent and starring Cuoco opposite David Oyelowo. She played Emma Brackett, a suburban wife and mother whose husband discovers that she has been living a double life as an international assassin. The cast also included Bill Nighy and Connie Nielsen, with Cuoco participating as a producer. Although the story takes place partly in the United States, principal photography was conducted primarily in Germany during the summer of 2022. Locations in Berlin included Kottbusser Tor in Kreuzberg and surrounding streets, while Studio Babelsberg in Potsdam provided the principal production facilities. Woodland locations in Brandenburg were used for scenes involving the characters’ attempts to escape from dangerous pursuers. Cuoco was pregnant during part of the filming, although she had not yet publicly announced the pregnancy when production began. Role Play was released on Prime Video in January 2024 and continued her involvement in productions combining comedy with more elaborate action sequences.

Her growing interest in developing television projects also led to Based on a True Story (2023–2024), a dark comedy thriller created by Craig Rosenberg for Peacock. Cuoco played Ava Bartlett, a pregnant real-estate agent whose husband Nathan, portrayed by Chris Messina, is a former professional tennis player struggling to establish a new career. After discovering that a man they know is connected with a series of murders, the couple attempt to profit from America’s fascination with true-crime podcasts. The programme also starred Tom Bateman and Liana Liberato, with Cuoco serving as an executive producer. Production was based around Los Angeles, using locations throughout the metropolitan area and studio facilities at Universal Studios in Universal City. The fictional Beverly Club, where Nathan works as a tennis instructor, was represented by the Griffin Club Los Angeles in the Cheviot Hills neighbourhood. Cuoco’s background as a competitive junior tennis player became particularly useful during scenes involving the club, and she continued playing tennis during the later stages of her pregnancy.

Based on a True Story premiered in June 2023, introducing a character whose impending motherhood closely paralleled Cuoco’s own circumstances. She had begun a relationship with actor Tom Pelphrey in 2022 after they were introduced through their mutual manager at the premiere of the final season of Ozark in Los Angeles. Pelphrey was already known for his work in television dramas including Banshee, Iron Fist and Ozark, and the two developed a relationship while Cuoco was preparing for her next professional projects. Their first daughter, Matilda Carmine Richie Pelphrey, was born on 30 March 2023. Cuoco subsequently discussed the experience of combining pregnancy, acting and executive production, explaining that her responsibilities had changed considerably since the conclusion of The Big Bang Theory. Based on a True Story returned for a second season in November 2024, incorporating Ava and Nathan’s experiences as new parents into the increasingly complicated crime storyline. The series was cancelled in April 2025 after sixteen episodes.

Outside acting, Cuoco continued developing her interest in horses and animal welfare. She had acquired a substantial ranch property in Thousand Oaks, California, north-west of Los Angeles, where she established facilities for riding and caring for rescued animals. The property developed into a private sanctuary accommodating horses, donkeys, cows, goats, pigs, chickens and numerous dogs. Cuoco had long supported animal rescue organisations and regularly adopted older animals or those requiring particular care, eventually expanding her activities beyond household pets to include retired racehorses and farm animals. She described the ranch as an important source of stability away from the entertainment industry, allowing her to concentrate on outdoor activities and family life. The property also became the principal family home she shared with Pelphrey and their daughter. In 2023, Cuoco launched Oh Norman!, a pet-care company named after her rescue dog Norman, who had died in 2021. The business developed grooming products, supplements and treats, with a proportion of sales supporting organisations involved in rescuing and caring for abandoned dogs.

Her personal interest in animals also influenced the way she approached professional commitments. Cuoco frequently discussed the practical arrangements required to care for the animals on her property while travelling for work, particularly when productions involved extended periods outside California. She maintained contact with trainers, veterinarians and animal welfare organisations, and her interest in competitive riding continued despite the serious accident she had experienced in 2010. Her relationship with Pelphrey became increasingly centred on their family home in Thousand Oaks, where he also developed an attachment to the animals. In August 2024, the couple announced their engagement, having already welcomed Matilda the previous year. Cuoco described the relationship as an important development after her two previous marriages, particularly because the couple shared similar views about family life and professional independence. Their home increasingly accommodated both their growing family and the expanding rescue activities that had become central to Cuoco’s life outside acting.

Cuoco returned to a leading dramatic role with Vanished (2026), a four-part suspense series created by David Hilton and Preston Thompson and directed by Barnaby Thompson. She played Alice Monroe, an American woman travelling through France with her boyfriend Tom Parker, portrayed by Sam Claflin. When he unexpectedly disappears aboard a train, Alice begins investigating his activities and discovers that their relationship has concealed dangerous secrets. The production also featured Karin Viard, Matthias Schweighöfer, Simon Abkarian and Dar Zuzovsky. Principal photography took place in France during 2025, particularly around Paris and Marseille. The production filmed at actual locations including Place de la Concorde, Place Vendôme and Pont Notre-Dame in Paris, while Marseille supplied much of the southern French setting. The city’s historic Vieux-Port, Corniche waterfront, Cours Julien, Le Panier neighbourhood and Gare Saint-Charles railway station all formed part of the production’s location work. Additional filming took place at Provence Studios in Martigues, where interior sets were constructed.

Marseille hosted approximately twenty-eight days of filming between April and June 2025, with production extending into the city’s northern districts as well as its historic centre. The use of actual French streets, railway facilities and waterfront locations allowed the story’s international setting to become an important part of Alice’s investigation. Cuoco spent an extended period in France, initially hesitating to accept the project because it required her to be separated from her young daughter. She later explained that Pelphrey encouraged her to take the role and continue pursuing challenging professional opportunities. Vanished premiered on MGM+ in the United States on 1 February 2026, while Prime Video released the complete series in several international territories later that month. The production represented another departure from her early sitcom career, requiring her to carry a suspense narrative involving deception, danger and prolonged emotional uncertainty rather than relying primarily on the comic timing for which she had become familiar.

During 2026, Cuoco also returned briefly to the fictional universe of The Big Bang Theory through Stuart Fails to Save the Universe, a comedy series developed by Chuck Lorre, Bill Prady and Zak Penn. The programme follows comic-book store owner Stuart Bloom, played by Kevin Sussman, as he becomes involved in a series of events threatening different versions of reality. Cuoco reprised Penny in an appearance involving an alternate-universe interpretation of the character, marking her first return to the role since the conclusion of The Big Bang Theory in 2019. The series also featured appearances by other actors associated with the original programme, including Melissa Rauch. The project allowed Cuoco to reconnect with a character she had played throughout much of her twenties and thirties while continuing to pursue independent dramatic and producing work.

Another significant professional development came with How to Survive Without Me, a family drama created by Greg Berlanti and Bash Doran for HBO Max. Cuoco joined the cast in March 2026 alongside Ray Romano, Joshua Jackson and Rita Wilson. The story follows members of the De Angelis family as they struggle to maintain their relationships following the death of their mother, Beverly, who has left behind instructions intended to keep them connected. Cuoco was cast as Kate, one of the central family members. In September 2026, HBO Max ordered a fifteen-episode first season following the completion of the pilot, providing Cuoco with another substantial television commitment. The production also brought her back into collaboration with Berlanti, who had previously worked with her on The Flight Attendant. As of October 2026, the programme had not yet premiered.

Cuoco’s family life underwent another significant change during the same year. She and Pelphrey announced that they were expecting their second child, and their daughter Philomena Carmine Bobby Pelphrey was born on 12 October 2026. The couple publicly confirmed the birth two days later, sharing photographs of the newborn and expressing their happiness at becoming parents for a second time. Philomena joined their three-year-old daughter Matilda, whose name also incorporates family names.
