Durdle Door is a natural limestone arch on the Jurassic Coast near West Lulworth in Dorset, England. The formation stands at the eastern end of a beach on the Lulworth Estate and was created when marine erosion broke through a band of resistant Portland limestone approximately 10,000 years ago. The surrounding coastline consists of steeply tilted bands of limestone, softer clays and sands, and chalk, creating the characteristic sequence of arches, coves, cliffs and offshore rock stacks around Lulworth. Durdle Door forms part of the Dorset and East Devon Coast World Heritage Site, commonly known as the Jurassic Coast, which was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001. The arch and surrounding beaches are privately owned by the Weld family as part of the Lulworth Estate but are accessible to the public. Its distinctive shape and relatively undeveloped coastal surroundings have made Durdle Door a frequently used filming location, capable of representing both recognisable English coastline and locations far removed from Dorset.

Durdle Door has appeared in Far from the Madding Crowd (1967), Wilde (1997), Mansfield Park (1999), Nanny McPhee (2005), Housefull 3 (2016), Doctor Who (1963โ€“), The Sandman (2022โ€“2025) and Project Hail Mary (2026). The arch, beach, surrounding cliffs and coastal path have represented Victorian Dorset, nineteenth-century England, Ancient Greece and the surface of an alien planet. The location has also been incorporated directly into musical and fantasy sequences in which the distinctive arch remains clearly recognisable.

In Far from the Madding Crowd (1967), Durdle Door is used during the apparent death of Sergeant Frank Troy. After learning that Fanny Robin has died in childbirth together with his child, Troy is overwhelmed by guilt and tells Bathsheba that Fanny was the only woman he ever truly loved. He leaves Bathsheba and walks across the cliffs above the Dorset coast before reaching the sea. Troy removes his clothes and swims away from Durdle Door Beach, eventually disappearing into the water. His abandoned clothes are subsequently discovered and he is presumed drowned, leaving Bathsheba uncertain whether she is a widow. Troy has actually survived and later reappears as part of a travelling performance troupe before returning to confront Bathsheba and Boldwood. The cliffs immediately west of Durdle Door were also used elsewhere in the film, while the earlier sequence in which Gabriel Oak loses his sheep was filmed nearby at Scratchy Bottom rather than at the arch itself.

In Wilde (1997), Durdle Door appears during a conversation between Oscar Wildeโ€™s wife Constance and Lady Mount-Temple. The two women walk along the Dorset coast with the arch prominently visible behind them while discussing the controversy surrounding Oscarโ€™s work and the growing difficulties created by his relationship with Lord Alfred Douglas. Lady Mount-Temple speaks about the hostility of Bosieโ€™s father, the Marquess of Queensberry, while Constance is increasingly confronted with the consequences of her husbandโ€™s private life. The scene uses both wider views of Durdle Door and the beach beneath the cliffs, presenting the location as an English coastal retreat within the otherwise predominantly London-based story.

In Mansfield Park (1999), Durdle Door appears during Fanny Priceโ€™s journey from her impoverished family home in Portsmouth to Mansfield Park. As the young Fanny travels by carriage to live with her wealthy relatives, the route takes her along the exposed coastal landscape above Durdle Door. The sequence emphasises the physical and social distance she is travelling as she leaves her parents and siblings behind and enters the very different world of Sir Thomas and Lady Bertram. The old chalk track and coastline around the arch provide part of the journey rather than representing a specific named location from Jane Austenโ€™s novel.

In Nanny McPhee (2005), Durdle Door Beach is used for the Brown childrenโ€™s seaside outing with Nanny McPhee. Tora, Christianna and Lily play on the beach while Sebastian struggles to fly a kite. Nanny McPhee uses her magic to help the kite rise into the air, after which Simon takes control of it. With the limestone arch clearly visible behind them, Sebastian asks Nanny McPhee whether she can prevent their father Cedric from marrying Selma Quickly, whom the children believe will become a terrible stepmother. The sequence makes extensive use of the real beach and Durdle Door itself. Access presented a practical problem for the production because of the steep route down from the cliffs, and several tons of filming equipment were transported to the beach by helicopter.

In Housefull 3 (2016), Durdle Door appears prominently during the musical number โ€œPyar Ki Maa Kiโ€. The Bollywood comedy follows Sandy, Bunty and Teddy as they attempt to convince wealthy businessman Batook Patel that they are suitable partners for his three daughters, Sarah, Gracy and Jenny. Sections of the song were filmed directly on Durdle Door Beach, with Akshay Kumar, Jacqueline Fernandez, Abhishek Bachchan, Nargis Fakhri, Riteish Deshmukh and Lisa Haydon performing against the limestone arch and surrounding cliffs. The production uses the location openly as a spectacular coastal backdrop rather than attempting to disguise its distinctive geology as another specific place.

In Doctor Who (1963โ€“), Durdle Door provides the setting for the regeneration at the end of the 2022 special โ€œThe Power of the Doctorโ€. After defeating the Master, Daleks and Cybermen, the Thirteenth Doctor is mortally wounded by a blast of energy from the Master. After saying goodbye to Yaz, she travels alone and watches a final sunrise before beginning to regenerate. The Doctor appears to stand on top of Durdle Door as Jodie Whittakerโ€™s Thirteenth Doctor transforms into David Tennantโ€™s Fourteenth Doctor. Neither actor actually stood on the arch. The production filmed aerial and background footage of Durdle Door with a drone, while Whittaker and Tennant performed their respective parts of the regeneration against green screen at different studios and at different times. Visual effects then placed the Doctor on the top of the natural arch. The completed scene caused controversy because the Lulworth Estate stated that it had not been told that the programme intended to depict the Doctor standing on the arch and was concerned that viewers might attempt to recreate the dangerous position.

In The Sandman (2022โ€“2025), Durdle Door appears in the second-season episode โ€œThe Song of Orpheusโ€, released in 2025. The episode takes the story back to Ancient Greece and recounts the history of Dreamโ€™s son Orpheus and his wife Eurydice. Durdle Door Beach and the surrounding coastline form part of the Greek landscape associated with their wedding celebrations and the subsequent breakdown of the relationship between Orpheus and his father. After Eurydice dies from a snake bite on their wedding night, Orpheus asks Dream to help him retrieve her from the Underworld. Dream refuses, believing that death must be accepted, and father and son argue on the coast before Orpheus seeks assistance elsewhere. The production filmed at Durdle Door in June 2023, closing the beach and car park while Tom Sturridge and other cast members worked on the location. The unmistakable Dorset cliffs and arch are used as part of the seriesโ€™ representation of the ancient Mediterranean world.

In Project Hail Mary (2026), Durdle Door and neighbouring Man Oโ€™War Beach represent part of Erid, the home planet of the alien engineer Rocky. Ryland Grace travels to Erid after sacrificing his opportunity to return directly to Earth in order to rescue Rocky and ensure that the Eridians receive the Taumoeba needed to destroy the Astrophage threatening their star. By the end of the film, Grace is living inside a specially constructed habitat that allows him to survive Eridโ€™s extreme gravity and atmosphere. Durdle Door appears during the closing scenes as the coastline outside his home, transforming the familiar Dorset landmark into an alien landscape. Grace and Rocky walk together along the beach while discussing the possibility that Grace could return to Earth now that the Hail Mary has been repaired. Grace ultimately continues his new life on Erid, teaching science to young Eridians. Filming at Durdle Door and Man Oโ€™War Beach took place in October 2024, with the beaches and nearby facilities temporarily closed while Ryan Gosling and the production crew worked on location.
