The Bewitched Statue is a bronze sculpture located in Lappin Park at the intersection of Essex Street and Washington Street in Salem, Massachusetts. The statue depicts actress Elizabeth Montgomery as Samantha Stephens from the television series Bewitched, seated side-saddle on a broom in front of a crescent moon. It was presented to Salem by the television network TV Land and unveiled in 2005, commemorating the connection between the series and the city, where several seventh-season episodes were filmed in 1970.
The Bewitched Statue has appeared in The Lords of Salem (2012). Although the statue was created as a light-hearted tribute to the sitcom Bewitched, the film uses it as part of its darker portrayal of modern Salem.
In The Lords of Salem (2012), the Bewitched Statue is shown in a black-and-white exterior shot filmed in Lappin Park. The camera presents the statue against the surrounding downtown buildings and leafless trees, turning the usually cheerful image of Samantha Stephens into part of the film’s ominous depiction of Salem. The shot helps establish the real city as the setting for Heidi Hawthorne’s story and connects Salem’s modern witch-related popular culture with the darker supernatural events that follow.
