The Lords of Salem (2012) is an American supernatural horror film written and directed by Rob Zombie. Sheri Moon Zombie stars as Heidi LaRoc, a recovering addict and radio DJ in Salem, Massachusetts, whose life begins to unravel after she receives a mysterious wooden box containing a record by a group called The Lords. When the record is played, it seems to awaken an old curse tied to the Salem witch trials and a coven of women executed centuries earlier. The film also stars Bruce Davison, Jeff Daniel Phillips, Ken Foree, Patricia Quinn, Dee Wallace, Judy Geeson, María Conchita Alonso and Meg Foster. Compared with some of Zombie’s earlier horror films, The Lords of Salem is slower and more dreamlike, mixing occult imagery, psychological collapse, religious horror and Salem’s witch-trial history into a bleak story of possession, inheritance and satanic revenge.
The Lords of Salem was filmed in both Salem, Massachusetts, and Los Angeles, California, combining real New England exteriors with interiors and constructed horror spaces shot in Los Angeles. Salem gives the film its most important location identity, with the city’s historic streets, old cemeteries and witch-trial associations forming the atmosphere around Heidi’s story. Some of the Salem material was filmed in the Charter Street Historic District, including the Old Burying Point Cemetery, one of the city’s most historically charged locations. The Witch House, also known as the Jonathan Corwin House, is closely tied to the same Salem witch-trial geography and fits the film’s visual world of black timber buildings, Puritan memory and occult tourism. Much of the interior work was done in Los Angeles, with Linda Vista Community Hospital in Boyle Heights used for some of the film’s darker institutional material, while the Los Angeles Theatre in Downtown Los Angeles was used for the grander theatrical and ritual imagery. This gives the film a split but effective location identity: Salem provides the historical and mythic foundation, while Los Angeles supplies the decayed interiors, stage-like spaces and exaggerated nightmare architecture that push the story from local legend into full occult hallucination.
Bewitched Statue
The Bewitched Statue has appeared in the Rob Zombie movie The Lords of Salem (2012). The film uses it as part of its darker portrayal of modern Salem.
