The Old Mill is a historic stone building at 12 Main Street in Blairstown, New Jersey, dating from around 1825. Originally operated as a grain mill, the building was acquired by Blair Academy in 1902 and extensively renovated the following year. During the reconstruction, four brick-framed arches were cut into its Main Street façade to create a covered pedestrian walkway, bringing the previously projecting building into line with the neighbouring properties. The work also included replacing the original roof with its distinctive gambrel design. Milling operations continued until the 1930s, and in 1941 the building became home to the Catherine Dickson Hofman Library, which remained there for more than fifty years before moving to larger premises. The property is still owned by Blair Academy, which has converted parts of the former library into residential accommodation for its staff. Much of the original milling machinery, including the large waterwheel, survives inside the building.
The Old Mill has appeared in Friday the 13th (1980) and Crystal Lake (2026–). Both productions feature the building’s distinctive stone arches during nearly identical sequences involving a young woman arriving in the fictional town of Crystal Lake. The scenes were filmed 46 years apart, with the television series returning to the original location and carefully recreating the camera angles from the 1980 film.
In Friday the 13th (1980), directed by Sean S. Cunningham, The Old Mill appears near the beginning of the film as Annie Phillips (Robbi Morgan) makes her way through the fictional town of Crystal Lake, where she has been hired to work as a cook at the summer camp. After crossing the bridge over Blair Creek, Annie is seen descending Blair Place towards Main Street. She enters the covered passageway beneath The Old Mill from the Blair Place end, walking through the stone arcade before emerging through the second archway. As she leaves the passage, she appears to be heading across Main Street. However, the following shot places her farther west, walking downhill along Old Academy Drive, another small street that leads towards the same main road. This creates an unusual geographical inconsistency, as Annie has already reached Main Street and appears to be walking away from it before the film suddenly shows her approaching it again from a different direction. The sequence combines several recognisable Blairstown locations into what appears to be a continuous journey, although the actual route would make little sense for someone walking directly through the town.
In Crystal Lake (2026–), the Friday the 13th prequel series, The Old Mill returns in the fourth episode, “A New Beginning”. Willow (Oona Roche), a young hippie travelling to Camp Crystal Lake in search of her friends, follows much the same route through Blairstown as Annie did in the original film. The sequence includes her passage beneath the building’s stone arches, reproducing the earlier camera composition with remarkable accuracy. The Old Mill has changed very little since the original production filmed there in 1979, allowing the filmmakers to use the actual building rather than construct a replica. The familiar arches, stonework and neighbouring buildings remain recognisable as Willow continues through the town towards Hartung’s Diner. The scene is part of a deliberate recreation of Annie’s arrival in Friday the 13th, with several of the original Blairstown filming locations revisited for the television series.
