Friday the 13th

Friday the 13th (1980) is an American slasher film directed by Sean S. Cunningham and written by Victor Miller. The film begins with the dark history of Camp Crystal Lake, where a young boy drowned and two camp counsellors were murdered years earlier. In the present-day story, the camp is being prepared for reopening by a new group of young counsellors, despite warnings from locals that the place is cursed. Adrienne King plays Alice Hardy, with Betsy Palmer as Pamela Voorhees, and the cast also includes Robbi Morgan, Kevin Bacon, Harry Crosby, Laurie Bartram, Mark Nelson and Jeannine Taylor. Although Jason Voorhees would later become the central figure of the franchise, the original film is built around mystery, atmosphere and the gradual revelation of the killer’s identity. Made on a modest budget, Friday the 13th became one of the key horror films of the early 1980s and helped establish the summer-camp slasher as one of the most recognisable forms of American horror.

Friday the 13th was filmed in New Jersey, mainly in Warren County, with Camp No-Be-Bo-Sco in Hardwick Township serving as Camp Crystal Lake. The working scout camp provides most of the film’s central locations, including the cabins, lakefront, archery range, generator shed, shower house and the areas used for the final confrontation between Alice and Pamela Voorhees. Sand Pond stands in for Crystal Lake itself, giving the film its most important image: a quiet summer-camp lake that becomes associated with murder, childhood trauma and the final shock appearance of Jason. The production also used nearby Hope and Blairstown for the material outside the camp. Hope appears in the early scenes involving Annie as she looks for directions to Camp Crystal Lake, with the former diner and general-store location on High Street and the nearby Moravian Cemetery connected to her journey. Blairstown is used for the night-time diner scenes with Steve Christy, and Main Street gives the film some of its small-town atmosphere before the story moves fully into the woods. The result is a horror film with an unusually strong real-location identity: instead of a studio-built camp, Friday the 13th uses actual New Jersey roads, diners, cemeteries, cabins and lakefront spaces to make Camp Crystal Lake feel like an ordinary rural place with a buried history.
