St Mark’s Campanile is the freestanding bell tower of St Mark’s Basilica and one of the most recognisable landmarks in Venice. Rising above Piazza San Marco, close to the basilica, the Doge’s Palace and the lagoon, the tower has long been one of the city’s defining visual markers. The current structure was completed in 1912, after the original campanile collapsed in 1902, and remains the tallest building in Venice.
Although St Mark’s Campanile often appears in films as part of the wider San Marco skyline, its most direct use as a filming location is in Nosferatu in Venice (1988), also known as Vampire in Venice. The film uses Venice as a gothic landscape of mist, canals, old palaces and religious landmarks, with the Campanile becoming one of its most striking horror locations.
In Nosferatu in Venice (1988), Maria, played by Anne Knecht, climbs the stairs inside St Mark’s Campanile. When she reaches the top, she looks out over Venice before taking off her shoes and climbing onto the railing. In the next shot, she is seen falling from the tower, apparently jumping under the influence of Nosferatu. The scene uses the height of the Campanile and the view across Venice to create one of the film’s most memorable and unsettling moments.
St Mark’s Campanile also appears more generally in films set around Piazza San Marco, including “Moonraker” (1979), “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade” (1989) and “Casino Royale” (2006), where the tower helps establish the unmistakable setting of Venice. However, in those films it functions more as part of the city’s famous backdrop, while “Nosferatu in Venice” uses the tower itself as an active location within the scene.
