Hotel DeMatteis

Hotel DeMatteis in Venice appears in “Spider-Man: Far From Home” as the rather disappointing hotel where Peter Parker and his classmates stay during the first part of their European school trip. After arriving in Venice by boat, the group pulls up outside the fictional Hotel DeMatteis, only to discover that it is far less impressive than they had expected. The location is mainly used for the students’ arrival and check-in, but it also helps set the tone for the film’s Venice section, where the trip quickly turns from an ordinary school excursion into another dangerous adventure for Peter Parker. The name is also a playful Marvel reference, nodding to comic book writer J. M. DeMatteis.

The real location is on Fondamenta Sant’Anna, near Rio de Sant’Anna in Venice. For the film, the production heavily altered the front of the building and created the Hotel DeMatteis façade, meaning the hotel as seen on screen does not exist in the same form in real life. The doorway, however, matches the actual entrance, where the sign above the door normally reads “Ramo S. Ana” rather than “Hotel DeMatteis”. The neighbouring buildings on both sides are also real and remain recognisable, making this a good location for visitors who want to compare the film version with the actual Venetian street scene. The location sits away from the busiest tourist areas, which also makes it feel more like the kind of slightly tucked-away hotel the film presents to Peter and his classmates.
