Michael Myers’ House

Michael Myers’ House is the real South Pasadena house used as the Myers family home in John Carpenter’s Halloween. The house originally stood at 707 Meridian Avenue, where it was filmed for the 1978 movie, but was later moved around the corner to 1000 Mission Street to save it from demolition. Today the building stands beside the Metro tracks near the corner of Mission Street and Meridian Avenue, close to several other South Pasadena filming locations from Halloween. The house is also known as the Century House and has been recognised as a South Pasadena cultural landmark. Built in the late nineteenth century, it is considered one of the city’s oldest surviving frame residences, but it is best known internationally as the childhood home of Michael Myers.

Michael Myers’ House appears in Halloween (1978). The building is one of the most important locations in the film and is used both for the 1963 opening murder and for the later scenes where Laurie Strode, Tommy Doyle and Sam Loomis encounter the house years later. The house was still at its original Meridian Avenue location during filming, so the current Mission Street site is the preserved building rather than the exact original street position seen in the movie.

In Halloween (1978), Michael Myers’ House appears in the opening sequence set on Halloween night in 1963. The camera moves through the house in a point-of-view shot as the young Michael Myers watches his sister Judith and her boyfriend, then goes upstairs, puts on a clown mask and murders Judith in her bedroom. After the attack, Michael walks outside with the knife and is confronted by his parents in front of the house. The film then cuts forward fifteen years, when Laurie Strode walks up to the abandoned Myers house to leave a key for her father’s real-estate business. Michael is already inside, watching her from the darkness. Later, Dr. Loomis visits the house while searching for Michael, and Tommy Doyle sees Michael standing outside it before he disappears. The house gives the film its central image of hidden violence inside an ordinary suburban home, even though the real building is now preserved at a different spot on Mission Street.
