Guggenheim Museum, formally the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, is an art museum at 1071 Fifth Avenue on Manhattanโs Upper East Side. Opened in 1959 and designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, it is one of New Yorkโs most distinctive buildings, known for its white spiral form and ramped interior. Its architecture has made it one of the cityโs most recognisable screen locations.
Guggenheim Museum appears in Men in Black (1997), The International (2009), Three Days of the Condor (1975), Manhattan (1979), Someone to Watch Over Me (1987), and When in Rome (2010). In some productions it is used as itself, while in others it functions as part of the wider New York setting.
In Men in Black (1997), the Guggenheim is used in the early chase scene after Agent J encounters his first alien. The pursuit leads him up the museumโs spiral interior, making the building one of the filmโs most memorable New York locations.
In The International (2009), the Guggenheim is used for one of the filmโs best-known set pieces, the major shootout staged inside the museum. The location gives the sequence a striking modern architectural setting and is one of the filmโs defining visual environments.
In Three Days of the Condor (1975), the Guggenheim appears in the sequence where Joe Turner hides out in the museum. The building is used as part of the filmโs tense Manhattan geography rather than as a tourist landmark.
In Manhattan (1979), the Guggenheim appears among the filmโs New York locations, helping place the story within a recognisable Upper East Side cultural setting.
In Someone to Watch Over Me (1987), the Guggenheim Museum is used for the scene in which Claire Gregory witnesses a murder inside the museum. Mike Keegan is also there, and after the killing he chases the murderer out of the building and catches up with him outside the museum. The location is therefore used not just as part of the filmโs Upper East Side setting, but as the site of one of its key early crime scenes.
