Empire Diner

Empire Diner is a historic Art Moderne restaurant at 210 Tenth Avenue, on the corner of West 22nd Street in Chelsea, Manhattan, New York City, USA. The stainless-steel dining car was built in 1946 by the Fodero Dining Car Company of Newark, New Jersey, and originally operated as a traditional neighbourhood diner serving the industrial and working-class community of West Chelsea. By the mid-1970s, the establishment had fallen into decline, but it was transformed in 1976 by new owners Jack Doenias, Carl Laanes and Richard Ruskay. The renovated restaurant opened as Empire Diner on 29 February 1976, introducing a more ambitious menu while preserving the original stainless-steel exterior, counter and dining booths. Laanes, a former head of the graphics department at the Museum of Modern Art, helped develop its distinctive visual identity, including the stylised outline of the Empire State Building mounted above the roof. The restaurant became a popular late-night gathering place for artists, actors, musicians and members of Chelsea’s growing gay community, contributing to the neighbourhood’s transformation from an industrial district into a centre for galleries, restaurants and nightlife. Its regular customers included figures from New York’s entertainment and art worlds, while Bruce Springsteen later recalled meeting Patti Scialfa near the diner during their early relationship. Empire Diner closed in May 2010 following a dispute over its lease and briefly reopened as The Highliner under different management. The Empire Diner name returned in January 2014, with chef Amanda Freitag overseeing the kitchen, but that incarnation closed in December 2015. The restaurant reopened again in April 2017 under new management, retaining its stainless-steel façade and much of its traditional diner layout while introducing a redesigned interior. The building is a protected part of the Chelsea Historic District.

Empire Diner has appeared in Godspell (1973), Manhattan (1979), Home Alone 2: Lost in New York (1992), Men in Black II (2002), Fighting (2009), City Island (2009), Person of Interest (2011–2016), Gossip Girl (2021–2023) and And Just Like That… (2021–2025). Its exterior appears in the opening montage of Manhattan and during Kevin McCallister’s sightseeing trip in Home Alone 2, while Men in Black II, Fighting, City Island and several television series have used the restaurant’s dining room for scenes involving the principal characters. Godspell features the diner before its famous 1976 renovation, making it one of the earliest surviving screen appearances of the building.

In Godspell (1973), directed by David Greene, the diner appears near the beginning of the musical, when the principal characters are introduced at their everyday jobs around New York City. Katie, played by Katie Hanley, works as a waitress behind the diner’s counter, serving customers before joining the group summoned by John the Baptist (David Haskell). Among the customers seated at the counter is composer Stephen Schwartz, who wrote the music and lyrics for the stage production and appears in a brief cameo as Katie serves him coffee. The sequence was filmed inside the original diner several years before it became Empire Diner, preserving the earlier appearance of its counter and dining area. The film subsequently follows Katie and the other performers as they abandon their ordinary routines to join Jesus (Victor Garber) in a series of musical interpretations of biblical parables across Manhattan.

In Manhattan (1979), directed by Woody Allen, Empire Diner appears in the film’s celebrated black-and-white opening montage. The sequence consists of approximately 60 shots of New York streets, buildings, bridges and neighbourhoods, accompanied by George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue and a voice-over in which Isaac Davis (Woody Allen) repeatedly attempts to compose the opening lines of a novel about his relationship with the city. The diner’s stainless-steel exterior appears in a street-level view of Tenth Avenue and West 22nd Street, shortly after another shot showing the nearby elevated railway tracks of the High Line. Its polished metal façade, horizontal window bands and rooftop Empire State Building ornament are visible in Gordon Willis’s black-and-white cinematography. The diner appears as one of the everyday Manhattan locations included in the montage, rather than as a restaurant visited by the film’s characters.

In Home Alone 2: Lost in New York (1992), directed by Chris Columbus, Empire Diner appears during the montage in which Kevin McCallister (Macaulay Culkin) explores New York after accidentally boarding the wrong flight and becoming separated from his family. Having discovered that he has arrived in Manhattan rather than Miami, Kevin begins enjoying the freedom of travelling through the city alone, visiting famous landmarks and taking photographs with his camera. At the corner of Tenth Avenue and West 22nd Street, he encounters a man dressed as Santa Claus walking on stilts directly outside Empire Diner. Kevin stops to look up at the unusually tall Santa, who hands him a small leaflet. The restaurant’s stainless-steel frontage and rooftop decoration are clearly visible behind them, with the camera looking towards the entrance from the pavement. The encounter is a brief part of the sightseeing montage, which also includes Radio City Music Hall, the World Trade Center and several other Manhattan locations. No interior restaurant scenes were filmed for this sequence.

In Men in Black II (2002), directed by Barry Sonnenfeld, Empire Diner appears when Agent J (Will Smith) takes Laura Vasquez (Rosario Dawson) there after investigating the murder of her employer, Ben, at a pizza restaurant in SoHo. Laura has witnessed the alien Serleena (Lara Flynn Boyle) killing Ben while searching for an object known as the Light of Zartha. Rather than immediately erasing Laura’s memory of the encounter, J takes her to the diner, where they sit together and eat pie while discussing what she has seen. The conversation takes place inside the actual Empire Diner, with the restaurant’s traditional counter, metal fittings and windows forming the surroundings. Laura describes the extraordinary events at the pizza restaurant, including Ben’s death and the bizarre appearance of his attackers. J asks her about Serleena’s questions concerning the Light of Zartha, gradually recognising that Laura may be connected to something of considerable importance. Laura, meanwhile, struggles to understand why J seems so accustomed to the existence of extraterrestrial life. The scene also begins to establish the personal attraction between the two characters, which becomes an important part of the film’s story. The restaurant’s exterior is shown as part of the sequence, with its unmistakable stainless-steel façade identifying the real Chelsea establishment. The pizza restaurant where Laura works was filmed separately at Famous Ben’s Pizza, 177 Spring Street in SoHo.

In Fighting (2009), directed by Dito Montiel, Empire Diner is used for a date involving Shawn MacArthur (Channing Tatum) and Zulay Velez (Zulay Henao). Shawn is a young man from Alabama who has been surviving in New York by selling counterfeit goods before becoming involved in underground fighting through small-time manager Harvey Boarden (Terrence Howard). After meeting Zulay, a single mother who works as a waitress, Shawn begins pursuing a relationship with her despite his increasingly dangerous involvement in illegal fights. Their meeting at Empire Diner provides an opportunity for the two characters to spend time together away from the street hustlers and underground fight venues that occupy much of the film. The sequence was filmed at the restaurant on Tenth Avenue, with the diner used as an ordinary Manhattan eating establishment rather than disguised as a different location.

In City Island (2009), written and directed by Raymond De Felitta, Empire Diner appears during a meeting between Vince Rizzo (Andy Garcia) and Molly Charlesworth (Emily Mortimer). Vince is a corrections officer from City Island in the Bronx who secretly attends acting classes in Manhattan, telling his wife that he is playing poker instead. At acting school, he meets Molly, a fellow student whose personal history is as complicated as his own. Following one of their classes, the two go to Empire Diner, where they sit together at a table eating oversized hamburgers. Vince has a copy of Konstantin Stanislavski’s An Actor Prepares lying between them, connecting the meeting to their shared interest in acting. During their conversation, Molly tells Vince about her troubled upbringing, including her father’s alcoholism, her parents’ disastrous relationship and her years attending boarding schools. Vince listens as she recounts the increasingly extraordinary events of her family history. The sequence was filmed inside the real restaurant, using its dining area rather than a constructed set. The two characters subsequently develop a close friendship, and their meetings become increasingly difficult for Vince to explain to his wife, Joyce (Julianna Margulies), who mistakenly suspects him of having an affair.

In Person of Interest (2011–2016), Empire Diner appears in the first-season episode Matsya Nyaya (2012). John Reese (Jim Caviezel) goes undercover as a new employee of an armoured-car security company after Harold Finch (Michael Emerson) discovers that one of its workers, Tommy Clay (Pablo Schreiber), may be involved in an impending violent crime. While working with the security crew, Reese accompanies his new colleagues to their usual diner, where they stop for a meal. The restaurant is the workplace of Ashley (Virginia Kull), a waitress who is also Tommy’s girlfriend. The diner sequence introduces Ashley and allows Reese to observe the relationships between the armoured-car employees before their next assignment. Ashley later becomes an important figure in the attempted robbery of a valuable platinum shipment. Empire Diner provides the restaurant interior used for the meal, appearing as Ashley’s workplace within the episode.

In Gossip Girl (2021–2023), the HBO Max continuation of the original television series, Empire Diner appears in the first-season episode Parentsite (2021). Max Wolfe (Thomas Doherty) visits the Chelsea restaurant for a conversation with his father as he struggles with problems within his family. The scene takes place inside the actual diner, where the two characters sit together away from their wealthy social circle. Max’s relationship with his fathers, Gideon Wolfe and Roy Sachs, becomes an important part of the first season as their marriage breaks down and Max attempts to cope with the consequences. The restaurant’s dining area is used for the conversation, adding Empire Diner to the series’ numerous real Manhattan restaurants and cafés.

In And Just Like That… (2021–2025), the sequel series to Sex and the City, Empire Diner appears in the first-season episode No Strings Attached (2022). Miranda Hobbes (Cynthia Nixon) and Che Diaz (Sara Ramirez) meet for dinner at the restaurant following Miranda’s decision to separate from her husband, Steve Brady. The two sit together in a booth near the end of the dining room, with the restaurant’s renovated interior visible around them. Their conversation is interrupted when two admirers of Che approach the table and ask for a photograph with the comedian. Miranda introduces herself as Che’s girlfriend and offers to take the photograph, but the encounter exposes an uncomfortable difference in how the two understand their relationship. Miranda has begun thinking of them as a couple, while Che is considerably more reluctant to define the relationship in conventional terms. The scene continues at the restaurant table as they discuss what Miranda’s introduction means. The production used the actual Empire Diner interior, including one of the booths installed during its later renovations, rather than recreating the restaurant in a studio.
