Empire Diner is an Art Moderne stainless-steel diner at 210 Tenth Avenue in Chelsea, Manhattan. Built in 1946 by the Fodero Dining Car Company, it became one of New Yorkโs best-known diner buildings, especially after its 1976 reinvention as a more stylish, late-night Chelsea institution. Its curved metal body and rooftop Empire State Building outline made it one of the most recognisable diner faรงades in the city.
Empire Diner appears in both film and television, including Manhattan (1979), Home Alone 2: Lost in New York (1992), Men in Black II (2002), Law & Order, Saturday Night Live, and The Days and Nights of Molly Dodd. It is most often used as a classic New York diner exterior rather than as a disguised stand-in for another place.
In Manhattan (1979), Empire Diner appears in the famous opening montage of New York locations. Its faรงade is used as part of Woody Allenโs black-and-white portrait of the city, where the diner serves as a distinctly urban, unmistakably New York image.
In Home Alone 2: Lost in New York (1992), Empire Diner appears in the sequence where Kevin moves through the city and encounters a Santa Claus on stilts outside the diner. The location is used as part of the filmโs broader New York sightseeing montage.
In Men in Black II (2002), Empire Diner appears in the scene where Agent J takes Laura Vasquez to the diner. Here the building is used directly as a real New York diner, with its exterior clearly visible as part of the filmโs Manhattan setting.
In Law & Order, Empire Diner is one of the recurring real New York locations used to give the series its familiar city texture. In this case, the diner functions less as a single memorable set-piece than as part of the showโs long-running use of recognisable Manhattan exteriors.
