Pete’s Tavern is a historic restaurant and bar at 129 East 18th Street at Irving Place in Manhattan’s Gramercy Park area. Dating back to the nineteenth century, it is widely described as New York City’s oldest continuously operating restaurant and bar. Its dark wood interior, tin ceiling, and traditional tavern character have made it one of the city’s most recognisable old-New-York hospitality locations.
Pete’s Tavern appears in Two for the Seesaw (1962), Seinfeld (1989–1998), Rounders (1998), Sex and the City (1998–2004), and several other film and television productions. It has often been used as a real Manhattan tavern rather than disguised as another location, which suits its strong historic identity.
In Two for the Seesaw (1962), Pete’s Tavern appears in the scene where Robert Mitchum’s character has a drink there. The location is used as part of the film’s everyday New York setting.
In Seinfeld (1989–1998), Pete’s Tavern appears in “The Sniffing Accountant” (1993), where Kramer sets up his mock detective-style sting operation involving Jerry’s accountant. The tavern is used directly for that meeting scene.
In Rounders (1998), Pete’s Tavern is used in the scene where Mike McDermott, played by Matt Damon, talks with Professor Petrovsky. Here the tavern serves as a quieter, more reflective Manhattan setting within the film’s New York world.
In Sex and the City (1998–2004), Pete’s Tavern appears in the scene where Miranda proposes to Steve. That gives the tavern one of its better-known television appearances outside its film work.
