Thomas Suffern House

Thomas Suffern House is a historic Greek Revival townhouse façade located at 11 Washington Square North in Greenwich Village, Manhattan, New York City. The house was constructed for wealthy merchant Thomas Suffern around 1832, after he leased the property from Sailors’ Snug Harbor. It formed part of The Row, a prestigious group of red-brick townhouses overlooking Washington Square Park, and was designed with white marble trim, a raised marble stoop, cast-iron fencing and an Ionic entrance portico. In 1939, the houses from 7 to 13 Washington Square North were gutted and incorporated into a modern apartment building, leaving their historic street façades as the principal surviving parts of the original residences.

Thomas Suffern House has appeared in I Am Legend (2007), where its exterior represents the fortified Greenwich Village home of Dr Robert Neville.

In I Am Legend (2007), Thomas Suffern House appears as the home of Dr Robert Neville, one of the last people in New York City unaffected by the virus that has transformed much of the population into nocturnal creatures. Neville lives in the townhouse with his dog Sam while conducting experiments in search of a cure. The façade is repeatedly shown in exterior and establishing shots as Neville returns to Washington Square before sunset and seals himself inside for the night. Later, Anna and Ethan bring the injured Neville back to the house, unknowingly allowing the infected to discover where he lives before their final attack. Only the exterior identity of Neville’s home was provided by 11 Washington Square North; the interior rooms, laboratory and final siege material were filmed inside the Marcy Avenue Armory in Williamsburg.
